FRANCE AND THE EGYPTIAN QUESTION.

M. Waddington, the French Ambassador, is urging the Earl of Iddesleigh, Foreign Secretary, to give a definite pledge as to the evacuation of Egypt by the British forces, and to agree to the control of the Suez Canal being of an international character. M. Waddington’s communications to the Foreign Secretary have been couched in amicable terms.

The Observer to-day publishes a statement to the effect that the British Government has intimated to France that it is not prepared to discuss the date for the evacuation of Egypt by the British forces, and that it declines any proposal for the internationalisation of the Suez Canal which would affect the access to India via the Canal or across the Isthmus of Suez.
