SAD BATHING ACCIDENT.
(united press association.) Invercargill, November 30. A fatal bathing accident occurred this afternoon. Three young men were out boating on the Waihopai, near Gladstone, when it was proposed to bathe. Two, named Thomas Barnhill Adamson and Cyril Tanner, a solicitor, entered the water, the third, a boy named Miller, remaining in the boat. The bathers started to swim across the river, Mr Adamson remarking that although he could not swim well, he thought he could manage to cover the distance. When about half way across Mr Tanner noticed that his companion was in difficulty, and, returning to him, advised him to put his band on his shoulders for help. Mr Adamson, in his excitement, sprang on Mr Tanner’s back, and both went down. Mr Tanner after a struggle got clear and came to the surface somewhat exhausted. Mr Adamson was not seen again alive, his body being recovered about two hours afterward. The fatality is a very sad affair. Mr Adamson, who was the son of one of the earliest managers in this town for the Bank of New South Wales, and the nephew of Mr Barnhill, of Castle Rock, was 18 years of age, and was an only son. He was in the office of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company. His father is incapacitated for business, and the youth was the hope of the family.
