AMUSEMENTS.

“ IMPULSE.”

The popularity of this piece and of Mr Wyberfc Reeve’s company was amply evidenced by the large audience which assembled at the Theatre last night week to see play and company. To say that the performance was as successful as were representations of the same play when Mr Reeve was here before is hardly doing justice to it, for certainly this piece was never better played in Wellington, from Captain Crichton, with his ‘•You are—you know you are,” down to the massive footman, who “ comes on ” twice, than was “ Impulse ” last night week. The parts fitted the actors and actresses so well that it seems almost invidious to mention one without mentioning all. Mr Reeve as Captain Crichton was delightfully funny, although at the same time he condensed a vast amount of sternness and determination into his scene with Victor de Riel. Several times during the performance he fairly brought down the house, and throughout he received ovation after ovation. Of Mr BrianDarley, as Colonel Macdonald ; Mr A. R. Lawrence, as Sir Henry Auckland ; and Mr Henry Hoyte, as Victor de Riel, it is impossible to say anything except in praise. Miss Lucia Harwood fairly excelled herself as Mrs Macdonald, her acting in each of the varying moods of the character being very fine ; and Miss Emily Fitzroy’s Mrs BeresSord was a very spirited piece of acting. Miss Rose Vernon Paget had a difficult part in Miss Kilmore, but managed it beautifully, and was hugely funny in the scene with Sir Henry Auckland. A number of smaller parts were capitally filled. The style in which the play was staged was something to be seen, and 'reflected great credit on the stage management.
