She sailed in the afternoon for Sydney. The U.S.S. Co’s ss Southern Cross arrived alongside the Queen’s Wharf at 9.30 on Monday morning from Dunedin, having left that port at 5.50 pm on Saturday. She experienced high wind and moderate sea. Th 9 Southern Cross sailed on Tuesday afternoon for Auckland, via Napier, and Gisborne. The ss Waverley, from Patea, berthed alongside the Queen’s Wharf at noon on Monday. She left Petea at 9.30 on Sunday morning, but, owing to the heavy weather experienced along the coast, had to shelter for 8 hours in Ohau Bay. The U.S.S. The steamer Kahu, a new screw steamer intended for active service on the New Zealand coast, arrived at Melbourne on July 4th from Shields. She is a smart-looking craft (says the Melbourne Argus), and on the voyage out has given proof of being a good sea-boat. She has been built to the order of Mr G. Richardson, Napier, New Zealand, by H. S. Edwards and Sons, of Howden-on-Tyne, and her dimensions are as follow : —Length, 115 ft ; beam, 19ft; and depth of hold, 9ft. The Kahu is built of steel, and the boilers and decks are also of steel. This makes her extremely buoyant, and she will be able to carry 200 tons of cargo, deadweight and measurement, on a 9ft draught of water. She is thus well-adapted' for bar, harbor, or river work. The Kahu has compound engines, supplied by the NorthEastern Marine Engineering Company, The diameter of the high-pressed cylinder is 17in, and of the low-pressed 32in. The length of piston stroke is 24in. The Kahu is credited with being able to steam 10 knots on a smalt consumption of fuel. She has been schoonerrigged for the voyage out. The U.S.S. Co’s ss Penguin arrived from Southern ports at 11.30 am Wednesday. She left Dunedin at 3.45 pm on Monday, and Lyttelton at 9 pm on Tuesday. She experienced southerly weather. She sails at 12.30 pm for Picton, Nelson, New Plymouth, and Onehunga. Turner has received a cable message from King’s Sound, saying that the ss Tnurnph arrived there on July 24, after a fine passage of IS days, all well. She sailed again ■for Newcastle and Lyttelton on Friday, July 30. THE SOUTHERN CROSS. The U.S.S. Co’s ss Southern Cross, which '.left for Auckland, via East Const, on r l uesday afternoon, underwent while in Dunedin recently a complete overhaul, the supervision of Captain Cameron, the Company s marine superintendent. She has been docked, scraped, cleaned, and painted. The whole or the cement inside has been taken out, ‘'”9 bottom thoroughly cleaned and re-riveted, and eight new plates put in. A new shoe 15ft long has been put on her forefoot. A new ballasc tank has been supplied forward, and new stringers have been placed along the sides for about 50ft inside the fore hold. New angle irons and floors have been laid in the bottom, and the whole of it coated with fresh cement. A new ceiling has been put in, and all the ; port3 around ’the ship have been made new. > ■New fore and-main decks have been laid, and a

new iron deck has been put underneath the galley, which is entirely new insm®New coal bunkers have also been supplied. The rudder and steering gear have been thoroughly overhauled ; the ship has been supplied with new chain plates, new rigging, new foretopmast, and foretopsail yards, while all her sails have been renovated. The boats have been thoroughly overhauled, cleaned, and repainted ; new chain-lockers have been fitted, together with new pipes and rose for pumping the ballast tanks. The officers’ quarters and those of the crew have been thoroughly cleaned, painted, and decorated. The saloon house has been fitted with new iron combings on the fore side, and new rails have been put around the decks. A new forecastle has been built, and the whole of the accommodation for the steerage passengers has been made new, and is capable of accommonating 15_passengers. The greater part of the saloon is new, while the whole of the sides have been grained and polished ; the baths and lavatories have all been attended to, and this part of the vessel, like the others, is in perfect order. The engines and boilers have undergone the most complete overhaul supervision of Mr Cook, superintendent engineer, and in fact the vessel may be considered as good as a new one.
