CASE OF INCENDIARISM.
(UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Auckland, August 3
The Auckland Dairy Company’s premises, Remuera, were completely destroyed by fire at 3.30 this morning. The buildings consisted of large wooden cowsheds, grain and milk stores, &c. Stephen Spalding, formerly employed as sub-manager by the Company, surrendered himself to the police as having deliberately caused the fire. While the fire was raging, Spalding roused the Company’s employ 43, ahji told them that he had set fire to the bnildiDgs, and put powder under them to blow them up. .He left the Company’s employment sorne time ago, owing to a dispute about dismissing a boy, and since then had threatened the manager’s life. Besides the buildings, a large quantity of milk, &c. t was destroyed. The building was insured for £SOO in the Colonial office. When taken to the guardroom, Spalding repeated the statement that he had set fire to the building. Later.
At the Remuera fire, two cows were roasted alive. Spalding was brought .up at the Police Court and remanded. His behaviour is so eccentric that no doubt is felt that he is insane.
