The Harbor Board has appointed Captain McGillivray sailing master of the new dredge, Mr Pollock, engingeer, and Mr Lock, assistant engineer. The Board has also accepted a tender for the erection of a beacon at Rangitoto Reef, to coßt £1396. The Waitaki has been chartered to run in the coal trade out of Gjeymouth. The whaler Alaska, at Russell, has been detained by the Customs authorities there. It is alleged that whilst at the Chatham Islands she landed a quantity of goods upon which duty was not paid. An assistant Relieving Officer has been appointed out of 170 applicants. The'salary is £IOO.
The boy Humphries who was arrested on a charge of rifling letters from boxes in the Post Office was discharged on the ground that there was no proof of the abstraction of letters.
