WELLINGTON MARKETS.

The customs duties collected at the port of Wellington for the week ending on Saturday amounted to L 3572 11s 7d. Beer duty, LSI 5s 2d.

Messrs George Thomas and Co. report produce prices this week as follow :—Transactions in grain and breadstuff lines have been confined to retail parcels, and, on the whole, there is not the slightest alteration in price or demand. Oats are firm at 2s 6d for fair, and 2s 8d to 2s 9d for best short samples. Oatmeal has slightly hardened, and is now inquired for at Ll 3 ss. Oaten chaff, L 4. Flour has usual business at following quotations —Ll2 10s for roller and Lll 10s for stone process; milling wheat has no inquiry, but fowls’ grain of good quality is particularly scarce ; we quote 3s 9d to 4s per bushel, according to sample. Bran and pollard steady at L 6 to L 7. Maize is easier, and sales are reported for forward delivery at 3s 9d. Barley (fowls), in consequence of the scarcity of wheat, is in somewhat better demand, but prices remain as last quoted, 2s 6d to 2s Bd. Potatoes still maintain their increased demand at 75s per ton for prime samples. Onions, Lll to Lll 10s; beans, 3s 6d to 3s 9d; peas, 4s 6d ; black oats, grass seeds, turnips, and mangolds are almost without inquiry ; hams and'bacon are overstocked at 7d per lb all round ; cheese, far from brisk, 6|d ; salt butter, no sale; fresh butter, lOd to Is ; honey, 3d to 4d ; lard, 4d to 6d ; eggs, Is 4d per dozen. Stocks of fruits have eased off, and there is every prospect of prices taking a turn for the better. At the present time the market is quite bare of all lines, save apples and a limited quantity of oranges. Poultry is dull at usual rates, and prices are unprecedently low for the season of the year. Messrs Cooper and Steward report wages as follows : Carpenters, 10s ; bricklayers, 12s ; painters and glaziers, 9s ; plumbers and gasfitters, 10s ; blacksmiths, 9s to 10s; labor and pick and shovel men, 7s; draymen, 42s to 50s ; coachmen, 30s to 35s ; grooms, 20s to 30s ; storemen, 30s to 50s ; gardeners, 7s; hotelmen, 203 to 40s; cooks, 253 to 40s; female do, 153 to 25s ; housemaids, 12s to 18s; general servants, 9s to 15s; nursegirls, 5s to 10s ; barmaids, 25s to 30s ; milkmen, 15s to 25s ; farm hands, 15s to 25s ; boys, 5s to 12s ; waitresses, 15s to 20s ; laundresses, L3O to LSO ; married couples, L7O to L9O.
