The Chairman said the Wharves Committee had had uuder consideration the Engineer’s report on the improved machinery and hydraulic lifting gear, for use on the Q N-en’s Wharf, and it was open to the B-oar'cl to express ita opinion. He thought there was only one point which rtquired elucidation, which was as to whether the vibration evased by the working of the vessels at tbo wharf would injure the pipes to be laid down. The Engineer explained that he had made special provision for that. Tbe Chairman said the Wharves Committee wished the Board So g>/j its approval to the recommendations of the Engineer, which were to the effect that he pines himself in communication with leading firms at Home with a view to obtaining detailed estimates of tbe cost of the machinery required, and the benefit of their experience, He (the Chairman) moved that the Engineer's recommendations he given effect to. In answer to the Mayor, the Chairman said the scheme involved an expenditure of £IO,OOO Mr Dransfield said he hoped the Board would not commit ifcse f to so large an expenditure without further consideration. He was not a mechanical engineer, and knew little about the scheme, and until further con- ! sideration, he did not want to be committed—j to it. Mr Wheeler said the report had been before j the Board a month. The step now proposed j did not commit them to the expenditure. If, however, the Engineer was satisfied after j getting the information he sought that a ’ saving could be effected he (Mr Wheeler) thought the works should be carried out, -f Captain Rote agreed with the previous j speaker. The Mayor thought they should not he committed to tbe scheme until all the information was before the Board. Mr Petherick thought they should have A every opportunity of considering the ma.ter, ' but expressed confidence in the Engineer’s abilities. The Chairman said Mr Duthie’s proposed j ’overtures to the City Council, if successful, j would not effect what was wanted. . Mr Duthie said the -,vork would' cost £IO,OOO, and before they committed themselves iu any way to sc large an expenditure they should get all information available. The motion was then amended to the effect that the Engineer place himseif iu communication with firms at Home with a view to ob- ■ taining all requisite information concerning the machinery required, as detailed in Lis report. The motion as amended waj then j put and carried, BY-LAWS. The by-law?) coacerniug charges for goods stared on the Queen’s Wharf, approved at last meeting, were brought up and ratified. Accounts amounting to £547 were passed i for payment, and the Board adjourned.
