At 2 am on Thursday Captain Lambert ran under the lee of Jackson’s Head for shelter, where the Manawatu remained 4 hours, but at 11 am the same day the' weather showing no signs of abating, she was forced once more to take refuge in Tory Channel. She left the latter place at 6 am last Fridayafter astayof 19hrs, and arrived in port as above, having experienced a strong SB gale with tremendous sea across the Straits. The following is a list of shipping disasters that have happened in Australasian waters for the years 1881-5 inclusive. New Zealand heads the roll of casualties, for during the five years no less than 87 vessels have been totally wrecked on our shores, while 207 vessels have been damaged, more or less, through stranding. The lists of the other colonies are as folNew South Wales —Total wrecks, 64 ; strandings, with and without damage, 104. Tasmania —Total wrecks, 32 ; stranding!, with and without damage, 49. Queensland—Total wrecks, 26 ; strandings, with and without damage, 70. South Australia—Total wrecks, 10; strandings, with and without damage, 43. The above list is

compiled from the five annual published wreck charts of Australia, Tasmania, and New Zealand, by the Merchant Shipping and Underwriters’ Association, Melbourne. The Government steamer Stella arrived in port and berthed alongside the Hail way Wharf on Monday night, from a tour of the Northern lighthouses. The Stella has been away from Wellington 47 days, during which time she has been right round the North Island. She has been visiting the lighthouses with provisions, and surveying the Kaipara bar. There is a likelihood of the screw steamer Neptune being brought down from Auckland and placed in the trade between Blenheim and this port. The Neptune is a small steamer about the size of the U.S.S. Co’s ss Waihi. The steamer Tamsui left Foochow for this port on Sunday last. She is due here about the 7th of next month. The C.G.S. Stella left the Railway Wharf on Wednesday morning on a visit to the French Pass, Brothers, Tory Channel, Farewell Spit, and Nelson Lighthouses, with provisions, etc. ARRIVAL OF THE SS DORIC. The Shaw, Savill and Albion Go’s ss Doric, Captain J. W. Jennings, from London, via Plymouth, Teneriffe, Capetown, Hobart, and Port Chalmers, arrived in port, and berthed alongside the Queen’s Wharf at 11.39 am on Saturday. She left Port Chalmers at 9.15 am on Friday, experienced moderate weather on passage up. A report of her' voyage, together with passenger list and imports have .already appeared in the columns of fhis paper. The Doric left, on Tuesday for. Napier, from which port she proceeds to Lyttelton, taking her departure from Lyttelton for England on the 2Gth inst.

ARRIVAL OF THE BARQUE MARY E. RUSSELL FROM NEW YORK. The barque Mary E. Russell, 54S tons. Captain W, S. Nickels, arrived in harbor on Monday from New York after a line weather passage of 106 days. She left New York at 10 am on the 28th February. Left pilot and tug off Sandy Hook. For the first three or four days she experienced heavy NW gales, shipping large quantities of water, but doing no damage. The North-East Trades were picked up in lat 29 N, and were carried to lat 1 N. The Trades were light and variable. She crossed the Equator 31 days out, in long 27 W, and 63 days out she crossed the meridian of the Cape in lat 42 S. From there she had a fair run to Tasmania, .which was sighted on the 29th May. She beat up the West Coast of the South Island, and came through Cook Strait, arriving off the Heads at 12 o’clock on Sunday night. Captain Nickels burned a blue light for a pilot, receiving an answer from the Pilot Station almost immediately. Captain Nickels speaks in very high terms of the courtesy and attention shown to him by Pilot Holmes. She came up the harbor at 1 pm on Monday, taking up an anchorage in the powder ground, having on board some cartridges for Auckland. This is the Mary E. Russell’s first visit to New Zealand, but she has made several trips to Tasmania and Australia. She brings about 1000 tons of cargo for Wellington and Auckland, the greater portion being for Wellington. She was berthed alongside the Queen’s Wharf on Tuesday. After discharging her Wellington cargo, she proceeds to Auckland to finish discharging, when she will load with gum for New York. Messrs W. and G. Turnbull and Co. are agents for her. A. list of her imports for this port is published elsewhere. THE AUSTRALIA. The steamer Australia, that was lately purchased by the U.S,S. Co. for the East Coast trade, arrived in port on Tuesday at 4 am from Dunedin, having left that port at 12.30 pm on Sunday. The Australia has previously been running in the trade between Melbourne and the north-west coast of Tasmania. She is a twin-screw steamer, built of mild steel by Burrell and Sons, of Dumbarton, iu April, 1884, under special, survey. Her dimensions are—length, 150 ft 4in ; beam, 26ft lin ; and depth of hold, Sft 9in. She is built in four compartments, with water-tight bulkheads, and was engined by M. Paul and Co., of Dumbarton. Her engines are compound surface-condensing, with four cylinders, the evlinders being respectively 16in and 30in, with a length of stroke of 22in, the boiler pressure being SOlb to the square inch. She has ample accommodation for passengers, carrying 32 saloon and 21 steerage. The Australia is schooner-rigged, and has good deck space. She appears to have been faithfully constructed, arid should prove a very serviceable boat for the trade she is intended for, viz., between Wellington and Auckland via coastal ports. Her officers are —IT. Johnson (late of Wanaka), master ; T. Rutter (formerly of Waihi), mate ; —Shepherd, second mate ; H. C. Seigel, purser ; W. Bannatyne (formerly second of Wairarapa), chief engineer ; J. Taylor, second engineer : J. Dunlop, steward. The Australia sailed on Wednesday for Napier, Gisborne, and Auckland.
