(united press association.) Christchurch, June 16. The United Canterbury Charitable Aid Board met to-day to consider the proposed amendments to the Charitable Aid Act with reference to adopting the property tax basis for collecting rates to support charitable institutions. Tbe Board was unable to make up its mind on the subject, the farther consideration of which was adjourned to Wednesday next. The medals and certificates awarded to the Canterbury exhibitors at the recent New Zealand Industrial Exhibition, were presented to the winners to-night by the President of the Industrial Association. The awards comprise 32 silver and 12 bronze medals, and 15 certificates. At an influential meeting of ratepayers held at St Albans to-night, a resolution was passed protesting against the increase of rating power sought to be obtained from Parliament by the district Drainage Board. The weather has been exceptionally cold all day, and to-Dight it is raining heavily. The difficulties between Suckling Bros,, boot manufacturers, and their men, who struck some weeks ago, are now virtually settled. Most of the striker* have obtained work elsewhere. Messrs Suckling have got sufficient men to carry on as a non-uuiou factory. This morning Mr Beetham, 8.M., granted an application to withdraw the charge of wife desertion againet Messenger, who was brought from Melbourne recently. He held that Mrs Messenger could not give evidence against her husband. Invercargill, Juue 16. A large meeting of settlers at Tbornbury passed resolutions emphatically protesting against the importation of stcat3 and weasels as a means of suppressing the rabbit peat. A man named John Crilly was found dead close to the Kingston railway bridge, near Winton. His skull waa fractured, and the
horse he had been riding was also so badly injured that it had to be shot. The enginedriver of the late train noticed nothing unusual, and supposed that deceased’s horse shied and threw him on the culvert, which it afterwards tried to cross. Dunedin, Jane 16. At the annual meeting of the Otago Agricultural and Pastoral Association it was stated that it had been decided to establish a ram fair. Mr G. G. Russell was appointed president. Hokitika, Juue 16. The Mont d’Or Company's total washing is 4200 z. It has declared a dividend of one shilling. Masterton, June 16. At a meeting of the Masterton Agricultural and Pastoral Society, held to-day, the following resolution was passed :—“ That steps be taken to have the Wellington district proclaimed a clean district, being free from scab ; vide Chief-Inspector Bayley’a report.*’ A memorandum is to be sent to the Colonial Secretary. Napier June 16. The Borough Council to night passed a resolution strongly protesting against the borough auditors being appointed by Government, the experience of county councils and harbor boards being adduced as a reason for not making any change in the present system of election.
