WELLINGTON MARKETS.

Wholesale Prices. FARM AND DAIRY PRODUCE

The Customs duties collected at the port of Wellington for the week ending on Saturday amounted to L 5669 18s lOd. Beer duty, Llls 4s 2d.

Messrs George Thomas and Co. report produce prices as follow : —“ Notwithstanding the inclemency of the weather, a fair amount of business has been transacted, and quotations for the following lines of breadstuffs and grain all show a firm, upward tendency. Flour has advanced quite LI per ton, and is now ruling at L 9 10s to LlO 15s ; pollard and bran, very scarce at L 6 10s and L 6 respectively ; fowls’ wheat, steady at 3s 8d to 3s 9d ; oats, 2s 4d to 2s 7d ; oatmeal, Ll2 5s ; and onions, L 9 toL9 10s. Several speculative purchases of prime butter are reported at prices from 9d to 9Jd, but until the arrival of intelligence _ from Sydney of a more cheering character it is impossible to quote higher rates for the current month. The ruling prices for maize at 4s, barley 2s Sd, beans 3s 9d, peas 4s 4d, potatoes L 3 5s to L 3 10s, chaff L 3 10s to L 4, cheese 6d, bacon and hams Sd, fresh butter lid, eggs 2s 6d, honey 4d to 6d, Nelson hops sd, carrots 60s, and turnips 50s, are unaltered. Supplies of fruit have been light, but quite sufficient to meet present requirements; bananas ruled from 6s to 7s per bunch; pines, 7s per doz £ cocoanuts, 8s per sack; oranges, 5s 6d to 6s per case ; Hobart apples, from 8s to 10s ; pears, from 10s to 15s ; New Zealand fruits have increased in demand, and prices are higher than has been the case for some time. Poultry— Turkeys, 10s ; geese, 6s ; ducks, 3s 6d ; fowls, 3s 3d per pair. We report the sale of a shipment of store pigs at prices averaging 13s each.”

We have had rather a slack week, owing to bad weather. Men of all classes are plentiful, and no difficulty would be found in supplying employers with any class of male labor. Good general servants, housemaids and nursegirls are rather scarce and hard to get for country places. We have one or two good housekeepers, also lady helps and governesses, awaiting engagement.
