During the passage from Lyttelton she experienced strong southerly winds. The barque Carnarvon Castle, which arrived from Liverjlpol yesterday week, is not the Carnarvon Castle that was reported in the Australian shipping news last March as having met with bad weather on the voyage out from Home, and with having one of her crew killed through falling from the rigging. The Carnarvon Castle referred to is probably the ship of that name that trades between Melbourne and London. The ss Australia, lately purchased by the U.S.S.jCofor the costal trade, arrived in Dunedin last Friday. ' Captain Russell, who was formerly in command of the U.S.S. Co’s ss Ringarooma, has left the Company's service and joined the pilot service at Melbourne. The ss Tui left Foxton last Friday morning at 10.30, but owing to the heavy weather was compelled to run into Pukerua for shelter. Through the courtesy of the manager of the Manawatu Railway, the passengers were brought'on to Wellington by a special train. The Tui remained at Pukerua till Sunday morning, when she came on to Wellington. Before coming to Wellington she tried to moor alongside the wharf at Petone, hut was unable owing to the heavy gale prevailing. She left on Monday for Foxton. The U.S.S. Co’s ss Hauroto arrived from the South at noon on Sunday. She left Port Chalmers at 4 pm on 3rd, called at Oamaru and Lyttelton, leaving the latter port at 9.30 pm on Saturday, making fast to Wellington wharf as above. She experienced fine weather from Port Chalmers to Oamaru, thence to arrival thick dirty weather and strong southerly winds. She brought up from the South 1720 tons general produce, and 37 horses. .The Hauroto sailed for Sydney on Monday at noon. The ss Huia arrived from Wanganui on Sunday afternoon, having left that port at 10.30 on Friday morning. She bad to anchor under Kapiti for three hours on Friday night, and further along the coast she had to seek shelter from the gale at the Coalheavers, remaining there till 7 Sunday morning, when she came on to Wellington. The ss Kiwi moored alongside the Queen’s Wharf at noon on Sunday, from Napier. She left Napier at 8 on Friday morning. The Kiwi was unable to make her usual coastal calls on account of the heavy sea running along the coast. She sailed for Castle Point and Napier on Monday. During the progress of the gale last Saturday, the maintopmast yard of the barque Sophia R. Luhrs was carried away, and lodged on the wharf. Luckily no one was injured by the accident.

The U.S.S. Co’s ss Maitai left Auckland on the 2nd inst. at 5 pm, called at Tupuroa, but

owing to a heavy sea could not land cargo; resumed voyage, and arrived at Gisborne on the 4th at J} pm ; left again three hours later, and arrived at Napier on next day at 9 am; left that port, for Wellington same day at 4 pm, and arrived here on Monday evening. She experienced from Napier a strong S.S.W. gale with very heavy seas. She had to slow down for several heurs owing to heavy squalls and rain. ...

The U;S.S. Co’s ss'Rotomahana left Sydney at 6 pm on the 28th ult, and reached Auckland at 3pm on the 2nd inst. She left Auckland at noon on the 4th, called at Poverty Bay the sth, arriving at Napier on the 6th; left latter port at 4 pm on Sunday, passed Cape Palliser at 1 pm next day, and reached Wellington at 4.30 pm. She experienced a strong southerly gale with heavy beam sea for two days after leaving Sydney, afterwards fresh variable winds with thick weather to Auckland, strong NE winds with head sea across the Bay of Plenty to the East Cape, and from thence strong southerly gale with very heavy sea and thick--weather to Palliser Bay ; thence fine weather to arrival. She sailed again at 7 same night for Melbourne, via Southern ports. Mr T. Rutler, mate of the Union steamer Waihi, has been appointed chief officer of the Company’s steamer Australia. The Shaw, Savill, and Albion Co’s ss Doric leaves Port Chalmers to-day (Friday.) She should reach here about 12 o’clock on Saturday. The U.S.S. Co’s ss Tarawera left Melbourne for New Zealand ports, via Hobart, on Tuesday afternoon. She is due at this port on Fri-day,-the 18th. The steamer Australia, which the U.S.S. Co recently purchased for the New Zealand coastal trade, is announced to leave Dunedin on Saturday next.

ARRIVAL OF THE CARNARVON CASTLE, FROM LIVERPOOL. ROUGH VOYAGE. The barque Carnarvon Castle, 728 tons, Captain Griffiths, entered the harbor yesterday week from Liverpool, after a rather long and stormy passage of 118 days. The Carnarvon Castle, left Liverpool at noon on February 4th, left the steam tug off Point Linas. She experienced fair weather going down the Channel, which was cleared on the 12th February. The NE Trades were picked up on the 25th of February, off the Canary Islands, and lost on the sth of March in long 7N. Seven days later the Carnarvon Qa?t!§ crossed the Equator. The SE Trades were picked up in long 2 N, the trades were very lights and were lost on March 21st in lat 21 S, The meridian of the Cape was passed on the 18th of April in long 18 E, lat 41 S. The Carnarvon Castle had been unfortunate in meeting with adverse winds and heavy seas during the greater portion of the time since she had left Liverpool. On the 14th of May in lat 46 S, long 108 E, she encountered a terrific gale with fearful heavy seas, the seas making clean sweeps over her, and doing considerable damage on deck. During the storm two of her boats were stove in and rendered useless. From thence she experienced a succession of contrary winds and heavy raging seas till her arrival. She sighted land when off Cape Campbell on Wednesday, She was boarded off the heads and up to an anchorage by assistant Pilot Shilling, She was berthed alongside the Queen’s Wharf at the inner side of the north end of the outer tee. Considering the tempestuous weather the -vessel has met with during the passage out, she presents a remarkably clean and smart appearance. She brought a large general cargo, and only one passenger. A list of her imports will be found elsewhere. Johnston and Co are agents for. her.
