PRINCE OF WALES’ BIRTHDAY.

The sudden change of weather from bright stmsbiny’days to cold, driving showers completely spoiled out-door amusements on Thurs day last, although a good many persons, tempttd by-an occasional gleam of euasbiue, attempted to enjoy thetaiselves. The artillery battery fired the usual royal salute in the morning, and the vesaels in harbor made a slight display of bunting. The steamers laid on for excursion trips fo Lowry Bay. had to’ forego their anticipated, profits, and the sports on the Basin Reserve were gone through under difficulties. Cricketing 'on the Newtown Park was postponed until a more propitious occasion. Ia the evening the performances at the Theatre and Atbenasum Hall were both'attended by large audience®, it being the only chance many had;.of observing the holidav. Trains were fun on the Wellington railway at frequent intervals, but the traffic manager did not find his energies overtasked. The morning train took a geod many sporting men to the Wai* rarapa Spring Raee Meeting, at Featherston, and there were also a good many through passengers; for Masterton,
