FORM AT TARANAXI J AUCKLAND HORSES SUCCEED (0.C.) NEW PLYMOUTH, Wednesday Owing to the heax'y state of the track | on Saturday, it is doubtful whether the form displayed at the Taranaki and jj Egmont - Wanganui Combined Hunt j Clubs' meeting will provide a reliable 1 guide for spring racing. Veteran New • Plymouth trainers stated that they cannot remember the track being heavier. Three Auckland horses, Bettermusk, Old Hack and Bueno, were successful. Cramond Bay and Leybourne, who won the principal flat events, the Halcombe Memorial Handicap and the Stratford Handicap, are proved mudlarks. Both have won at Trentham under winter conditions, and on Saturday their ability to handle the heavy ground contributed materially to their success. Cramond Bay, who won in solid fashion, was having his first run over a middle distance. After being one o! the leaders most ot the way he was strongly challenged by Peter's Choice in the straight. Peter's Choice, who can also handle a heavy track well, had no chance with the winner over the last 100 yards. The manner in which Cramond Bay was running on at the finish augurs well for his future prospects. Luyboume Scores Leybourne accounted for his opponents in the Stratford Handicap too decisively for any excuses to be made for them. When he won at Trentham in July he led all the way. but on Saturday was slow to move, and racing out of the back he was near the rear of the field. Leybourne commenced a run on the outside, and after reaching the straight took the measure of Tideless, who had run to the front at the home turn. Derryogue issued a challenge over the last half-furlong, but was unable to extend Leybourne. The four-year-old Bueno gave further evidence that he is a greatly improved horse by winning the Waihi Hack Handicap from end to end and making a great bid to complete the double when he filled second place in the Waverley Hack Handicap. Though his success at Ellerslie was also achieved on a heavy trzck, Bueno has shown that he is also at home on top of the ground, as the going was firm when he won at Stratford on January 2. The five-year-old Saleve mare Gayanne won a double in good style. She was not extended over the final stages of the second division of the Wereroa Stakes, and in view of this effort it was surprising to find her paying double figures when she scored in the Waverley Hack Handicap. It is probable that Gayanne was rather lucky in running wide at the home turn in her second race, as tbe outside of the course provides much firmer going in wet weather than the rails. Had Bueno also come out it is probable ho may have won. Form of Colonel Vaalg The Paeroa owner-trainer Harvey Evans brought a team of four to the, meeting, winning with Bettermusk and Old Mack and getting a third place with Betterman. Bettermusk won the Hack and Hunters' Hurdles in easy fashion and seemed to appreciate the heavy track. Old Mack's ability to begin smartly was a big asset in his success and he was patiently ridden by Mr R. Waller. Betterman. s versa tile performer, though he had no chance with Peter's Choice and Cramond Bay in the Hal combe Memorial Handicap, outstayed thf rest, his superior racing condition being in his favour. W. H. Hume, of Trentham. also led in two winners. Cramond Bay and the half brother Golden Kea. Golden Kea had previously raced disappointingly, but he won the first- division of the Wereroa Stakes in impressive style He was one of the leaders all the way and was not troubled in the run home. His time was over a second faster than that of Gayanne in the second division. Colonel Vaals was responsible for a sound finish in the Stratford Handicap. He missed the jump-out and was a long way back for half the journey, but flashed into fourth place at the finish. His run over the last three furlongs was a wonderful effort. Keen Play ran a creditable race in the Halcombe Memorial Handicap, considering that he does not do Well in heavy ground. He finished resolutely in fourth place and may soon do better. Peter's Choice rarely runs a bad race, but seems destined to fill minor places. Last season he weighed in on 11 occasions for only one win. He has done «ome schooling and may make his debut over hurdles shortly. WANGANUI MEETING PROVISION FOR DIVISIONS (P A.) MUNRO TO RIDE SHANNON SYDNEY, Sept, 5 Darby Munro has been engaged to ride Shannon in the Epsom Handicap. It was earlier reported that Munro would ride Sleepy Fox in the big mile race. Bayly Payten, the trainer of Sleepv Fox, said I hat. Munro's acceptance of Shannon as' his mount should not be interpreted as an indication that the New Zealand champion would not run. Munro is the leading rider for the Pavten stable, and it was generally assumed.that he would ride Sleepy Fox in the Epsom should that gelding start. Payten said, however, that Munro was free to choose from the mounts offered him. Payten added that, he expected Munro to ride Sleepy Fox in the Chelmsford Stakes next Saturday. "Should it be decided to start Sleepy Fox in the Epsom I have -no doubt that we will be able to get a suitable jockey;" he said. Munro was influenced in his choice of Shannon as his Epsom mount by the weights —Shannon'n fi.lo against Sleepy Fox's 9.11. says the Sun's turf editor. Munro seems to be one of a party who consider that. Sleepy Fox's 9.11 is a trifle too much for him. These people, says the writer, point- out that Chatham won with 9.10, and most of i>era seem to be lacking conviction that Sleepy Fox is as good as Chatham. Tho New Zealand visitors Immediate and High Play were exercised at Randwick yesterday. Both have engagements for the Rosehill Club'!, meeting on September 15, Immediate in the Camelia Stakes and High Play in the High-weight Handicap. NEW AMERICAN RECORDS NEW YORK.
