NO TAX RELIEF
BILL FIXING RATES MR NASH'S EXPLANATION (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Wednesday The Land and Income Tax (Annual) Bill was introduced in the House of Representatives tonight and read a first time. The Leader of the Opposition, Mr Holland, said he hoped the Minister of Finance, Mr Nash, would have profited from the logical arguments of the Opposition in recent weeks and would be able to announce a reduction in taxation for this year, enabling New Zealand to lead Australia and the world once more. He was sure the Minister did not want to retain high taxation for the sake of taxation. When Mr Nash rose to explain the bill to the House, Mr F. W. Doidge (Opposition Tauranga) interjected: "Bail, Santa Clans.' Mr Nash said the bill was an extremely simple one of three clauses. It fixed the rate of land tax and of income tax for the year commencing April I, 1945. The text of last year's bill had been so good that it had been followed again this year. An Opposition Voice: Then there is no reduction of any kind? Mr Nash: No.
