When near Singapore the Cleopatra was met by a Japanese destroyer from which were handed charts and details of the Singapore Later Japanese minesweepers escorted the Cleopatra through the minefields protecting the base. Our men are expected to land and take over Singapore tomorrow or Thursday. Rear-Admiral Cedric Holland, who commanded the British aircraft-carrier Ark Royal in 1940 and 1941, flying his flag in the cruiser Sussex, accompanied by H.M.S. Vigilant, is due at Singapore today with an occupying force, which will be ready to land immediately. Royal Marines yesterday formally took over Penang, the British island possession off the west coast of Malaya.
