KARITANE REUNION PRESENTATIONS TO MATRON The Karitane Hospital, Mount Albert was the scene of a very successful reunion day, when about 160 Karitane nurses, past and present, were "welcomed by the matron, Miss S. Lusk. The guests included the Mayor and Mayoress of Mount Albert, Mr and Mrs H. A. Anderson, three former presidents of the Auckland branch of the Plunket Society, Mrs W. R. G. Emerson, Mrs J. C. Allan and Mrs T. Clifton Webb, the treasurer, Mr A. R. Elder, Dr T. H. Pettit, of the honorary medical staff, and Miss H. Chapman, charge nurse at Pluriket headquarters. Members of the executive and advisory board of the Plunket Society and of the Plunket nursing staff were also present. Referring to Founder's Day, which fell vesterday, Dr Pettit spoke briefly on tfie work of Sir Truby King and expressed the hope that the Karitane nurses would be able to tend the babies in a world of-lasting peace. With reference to Miss Lusk's impending departure for Dunedin to take up the position of nursing adviser to the council of the Plunket Society, Dr Pettit said that during her six years in office as matron of the Auckland Karitane Hospital sho had endeared herself to all who had worked with her. Several presentations were made to Miss Lusk. After thanking her for her kindness in having the reunion at the hospital, Miss Q. Haselden, president of the Karitane Nurses' Club, presented her with a fountain pen from the members as a mark of appreciation of her help and interest. Miss Chapman, in making the gift of a travelling bag from the Plunket nursing staff and the sisters at Karitane, thanked Miss Lusk for her excellent co-operation. The advisory board of the society gave a travelling rug. When afternoon tea had been served, the guests inspected the hospital. At the conclusion of the afternoon about 50 nurses remained for a buffet tea, after which they and the present trainees attended a special service at St. Luke's Church, Mount Albert, to commemorate Founder's Day. as well as thanksgiving for victory in Europe. ADULT EDUCATION WINTER SCHOOL OPENS The winter school for women, which last year proved so successful and which is again being held under the auspices of the Auckland University College advisory committee of aduit education, opened last night at the Epsom Girls' Grammar School. Associated .on the platform with the director, Mr P. Martin Smith, were Mrs R. S. Jndson, chairman of the women's advisory committee, Mr W. H. Cocker, president of the University College Council, Mrs Cocker, and the two women tutor organisers for adult education, Miss Sheila McMillan and Miss E. M. Smith. In opening the school, Mr Martin Smith spoke on tKe value and significance of adult education and the important role it might have to play in the many problems which peace would bring. At the conclusion of the address the visitors enjoyed a bright social programme arranged by Miss McMillan and Miss E. M. Smith. As in previous years, a comprehensive programme of group discussions, lectures, demonstrations and visits to places of educational! interest has been arranged for the school, which will continue until Friday. This morning, a panel discussion will be held by Miss Joan Rattray, Miss M. Gaudin, Miss W. McNaughton and Miss E. M. Smith. In the afternoon there will be a visit to the pottery works and the High School at Avondale and in the evening Mr P. Martin Smith will address the gathering on "Youth in the World Today." Other items of particular interest in the week's programme will include a visit to the Plant Research Station at Mpunt. Albert and a lecture by Dr Henry Burrell on war neurosis. MOTHERS HONOURED Y.W.C.A. FUNCTION A banquet in honour of their mothers, organised by members of the Up-Town Club of the Young Women's Christian Association, was held last night in the Y.W.C.A. Assembly Hall. The function also marked the first of the celebrations connected with the association's diamond jubilee, which occurs this year. The hall was attractively decorated with flowers and the young girls were admirable hostesses. The toast-mistress was Miss Betty Thorpe. Toasts were proposed by Miss Isobe! Clarke, to the mothers; Mrs M. M. Bennett, to the daughters. Miss Elva Nicholson, to the Y.W.C.A. Responses were given by Mrs M. Blackwood, Miss Duleie Trethowen and Mrs T. Derrick, president of the Y.W.C.A. board of directors. Following the banquet, Citizens in Training sang "The J-ord's Prayer," and the mothers were then entertained at a display of gymnasium and folk dancing by members of the Up-Town Club, under the leadership of Miss JB. Burrell. Solos were contributed by Miss Ruth Christiansen and pianoforte solos by Miss Joan Barker. The evening concluded with community singing. The accompanist was Miss Beryl Warren. Gregory, 1(5 Hargreaves Street. Ponsonby. Kennedy—Fraser.—The engagement is announced between George Kennedy (overseas), youngest son of Mrs G. Kennedy, Ponsonby. Auckland, and the late Mr John Kennedy, and Denver Patricia, youngest daughter of Mr and Mrs N. A. Fraser, Kawakawa, Bay of Islands. Levien—Webb.—Mr and Mrs Webb, of Domain Street, Devonport, announce the engagement of their only daughter, Mary, to John Robert, only son of Mr and Mrs L. A. Lerien. Rocky Bay, Waiheke. , Thompson—Boyes.—Mr and Mrs M. Boyes, of Katikati, Bay of Plenty, announce the engagement of their younger (laughter, Doreen Beatrice, to William Russell, only son of Mr and Mrs R. L. Thompson. Onehunga, .Auckland.
