ADVICE TO REFEREES A general talk on the course a referee should follow if he aims to reach the top was given at a recent meeting of Wellington Rugby referees by Mr T. G. Taylor. The speaker said it was a sound policy for a referee to carry a law book with him summer and winter. When it came to taking the field the first thing was to look like a referee—to be as well turned out as the teams were required to he. Then he should endeavour lo enter into the spirit of the game. Be should ignore the spectators completely and remember that he was there neither as a policeman nor as n father and mother for the players. He should endeavour to see that the laws are fairly ami correctly applied, but remember that the game should only be pulled up when a le;un is likely to profit by one of its own infringements. Mr Taylor advised young referees to study the leading officials and model themselves upon the best characteristics of each. They should take the rough with the smooth when it. came to appointments to matches and remain loyal to their association and to their fellow-referees.
