DEEP-SEA FISHING
BAY OF ISLANDS CATCHES (0.C.) RUSSELL, Friday
A 2201b striped marlin was caught on the Bay of Islands deep-sea fishing grounds by Mr H. L. Cleary, of Whangarei, when he had neither chair nor harness. He had earlier caught, while in the chair, a striped marlin weighing 2601b. Mr L. Bird, of Whangarei, brought in a 3701b striped marlin. Other catches were a striped marlin weighing 2541b, landed by Mr E. D. Taylor, of Kawakawa, and a 2081b striped marlin, caught by. Mr R. C. Irvine, of Auckland. LOADING OF SUGAR WORK UNDER NEW ORDER The loading of sugar from a lighter into the Union Steam Ship Co.'s vessel Waiana started yesterday under the terms of a new order issued by the Waterfront Control Commission. The order follows recent disputes at Auckland over the transferring of wharf gangs to work at ship's holds during the loading of sugar from lighters. It applies only to Auckland and states that, when consignments of sugar are required to be loaded overside from lighters, wharf men with hold classifications shall be employed and shall work on the ship for the purpose of loading sugar. Disputes involving stoppage of work arose recently when the Auckland Waterside Workers' Union claimed that the transferring of gangs of men engaged for work on the wharf to ships' holds was contrary to a clause of the Order of the Waterfront Control Commission, 1940. It was recently remarked by the chairman of the commission, Captain It. E. Price, that it would appear that the clause'did uphold the union's view. The terms of the new order, however, are on the lines of an agreement reached at a conference between representatives of the union and the shipping companies on Wednesday.
