THE LEAGUE CODE

OPENING ON SATURDAY ■Arrangemente in connection with the opening of tho season at Carlaw Park on Saturday were completed at Inst evening's meeting of the .Auckland Rugby League. The chairman, Mr J. W. Watson, said it was intended to include the ten teams nominated in the senior competition, and there was every prospect of a splendid season. A new scheme will be in operation this season, when major and minor championships will be decided in the second round. The leading teams will play in a separate competition, and the minor champions will meet in a subsequent series before the Roope Rooster competition is started. Mr L. Bull, president of the Referees' Association, waited on the committee, and protested against the method of appointments of referees for senior matches. He claimed that qualified referees were in a better position to make the appointments. Further evidence was taken in committee, and a decision on a future policy is to be made later. The Onehunga Borough Council wrote stating that the playing area at Waikaraka Park -would not be available in 1046 as the ground was being reconstructed by the Works Department. Mr Watson said the whole question of playing grounds had been discussed with the Sports Council, which intends to take the matter up with the authorities concerned. The present position of playing grounds occupied by the Army was most unsatisfactory and there appeared no reason for the delay.

It was reported that an organisation had been formed at Rotorua, and the secretary, Mr .1. Culpan, was instructed to negotiate with a view to the code being re-established in the district.
