HOLIDAY CRICKET

AUCKLAND'S SMALL LEAD GOOD BOWLING BY BURKE (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Monday When stumps were drawn at 0 p.m. today, after a day and a-half's play, the representative cricket match between Auckland and Wellington stood with honours about easy. On Saturday Wellington totalled 105 and Auckland had scored 14 for two wickets. Resuming today, Auckland ran the score to 227 for eight wickets and then declared. At stumps Wellington had 25 runs on without loss, which means they are only eight runs behind with all their wickets in hand. The wicket was drying, after rain overnight, when Wellington started tho first innings at .10.5:! o'clock on Saturday morning. Mr, Vicar and Howe look 53 minutes to reach 38 for tho first wicket, and here McViear, who had scored 10, was run out in going Tor a second run. The 'Auckland bowlers were keeping an immaculate length and runs came at a funereal pace. After scoring 3!» in 125 minutes, Rowe moved out to one of Burke's slows, missed, and was smartly slumped by Kent. Duffy took 55 minutes to reach 11, and Chapman no minutes to score I. The. brightest form was shown by Bain, although it took him 105 minutes for his contribution of 51. Hoar shaped confidently for '_' l not out and might with advantage have been sent in earlier. Burke played havoc with his slow spinners after the luncheon adjournment, having Duffy, Ell and Mooney smartly stumped by Kent off his deliveries in rapid succession. The Wellington innings closed at I.IJS p.m. for the moderate total of 105. Burke put up a line bowling performance in taking six wickets for 71 runs off 30 overs. He was well supported by Kerr, who took two for 50 off 30.5 overs, 17 of which were maidens. He sent seven maiden overs down in succession. In 70 minutes' batting, Auckland lost two wickets for I I runs, Whitelaw and Cleave both being dismissed by Allen, the slow lefthand spin bowler, just after they had reached double figures. A feature of today's play was the stubborn stand made by B. Sutcliffe and C. Kerr for Auckland's fifth wicket. Four wickets were down for OS when the pair came together, and, without at any time forcing the pace, they cemented a partnership which put on I*2B runs in 120 minutes. Sutcliffe, who had reached 75, including nine fours, was caught at long-on by Hoar off Allen. Kerr, after reaching the even half-century, was run out. The burly left-hander Wheeler scored 22 quickly, awl when eight wickets had fallen for 227 Auckland applied the closure.

Allen was the most, successful of Ihe Wellington bowlers, taking five wickets for CO runs off 15.3 overs with his slow lefthanded spinners. Matheson. former Aticklunder, put up a fine bowling performance in taking one wicket for '25 runs off I overs, 11 of which were maidens.

Mills, the exNew Zealand and Auckland representative, and A. Hope, another ex-Aucklander. The wicket had dried out well and, although the pair opened cautiously, anything loose was hard driven.
