SYDNEY JOCKEY

CONFIDENCE OF PUBLIC Leading jockey J. Thompson lias been approached to withhold announcement o£ his riding engagements until the day of the races, says the Sydney Morning Herald. This is necessary, it is claimed, because of tlio prepost backing of horses to be ridden by him. Thompson's skill, the fact that lie will only accept engagements to ride horses on their merits, and tho knowledge that he has the offer of several mounts in a race, and, therefore, exercises some choice, combine to create great public confidence in him. No jockey rides more favourites than Thompson aud some owners say that because of this forestalled in the pre-post betting markets are doing a profitable business. If these operators can ascertain by Friday the horses Thompson is to ride they accept whatever price is available, assured in the knowledge that on the course the quotation will shrink sufficiently to enable them to hedge their bets to show a profit. Thompson is somewhat concerned about the situation. His view is that ho has a duty to the owners and trainers who trust him. He stated that it had been the practice to make his mounts available when engagements were completed, but if owners desired that tho engagements be withheld until the racecourse was reached it restart with them. So far as lie was concerned he did not propose to divulge his mounts.
