RESCUE FROM FIRE
MAN TRAPPED IN ROOM PROMPT ACTION BY BRIGADE (0.c.) GISBORNE, Saturday An elderly man, Mr Frederick Peterson, had a narrow escape early this morning when a fire broke put in the house in which he was sleeping aud flames surrounded his rooni. He was rescued from the burning building by the fire brigade suffering from the effects of smoke and was sent to hospital. The fire occurred in a residence owned by Mr .J. J. Box and the family escaped without- difficulty, but the room occupied by Mr Peterson was in the back, close to" the seat of fire and his escape was cut off. To rescue the trapped man a group of firemen promptly cleared a passage through the flaming; * portion of the building and brought out Mr Peterson in a distressed condition. The hack portion of the house was destroyed by fire. After treatment at the hospital Mr Peterson was reported to be making a good recovery from the effects of smoke.
