EXCITING DRAWN GAME CITY TEAM AGAIN DEFAULTS A splendid recovery by 1 Ponsonby late in the second 6pell was a feature of a drawn same at Carlaw Park on Saturday afternoon with Manukau, the leading team in the Auckland Rugby League's senior competition. There was a good attendance. Manukau led until 15 minutes before time, but Ponsonby scored two fine tries as the result of brilliant back play and, jugt on time, the backs went very close to effecting a win. In the curtain-raiser, Mount Albert proved too good for Point Chevalier, while Richmond easily defeated Newton. Otahuhu won a keenly-contested game from North Shore at Devonport. For the second Saturday in succession, the City team defaulted, this time to Marist. The dispute between the City Club and the Auckland Rugby Leaguo remains unsettled. Play in the first spell between Manukau and Ponsonby was dominated by tho former, which had a decided territorial advantage, and narrowly missed scoring on two occasions. Tho forwards were well matched, but the Ponsonby vanguard did better on the heavy ground. The Manukau backs, however, were more constructive in their play, particularly Ralph Martin, Murray and Rogers. Rapana, the Ponsonby fullback, kicked too often, giving away possession. A passing rush, in which Shilton, Murray and Ewe wero prominent, resulted in Reg. Martin scoring a good try. These wero the only points scored in the first spell, and Manukau led 3-nil at half-time. Early in the second spell, the Ponsonby forwards infused plenty of dash into their play, Bailey, Hull and Miller doing great work in the looso. The Manukau backs wero always dangerous, and another fine try came from superior speed and good handling. Ponsonby then appeared a beaten team, but the backs rose to the occasion splendidly, and Kay and Jordan burst through. The pair handled the ball a second time, and Nurse sent it back to Fielder (a forward), who scored a great try. A few minutes later, the backs got moving again and Kay and Jordan revealed superior speed to give Nurse a try. Tho crowd cheered a magnificent last-min-ute rally by Ponsonby, and Kay cut the defonce to ribbons. A try seemed certain as Jor'dan and Nurse raced in support on the outside. However, Kay turned back infield instead of passing, and Ralph Martin saved. A feature of the game was the high standard of forward play. Shilton, Ririnui and Ewe (Manu-

kau) were excellent in the loo6e, while Bailey. Hull, Mullett and Fielder did a lot of effoctive work for Ponsonby. , ~ .
