AUCKLAND WINS

return rugby match WAIKATO TEAM DEFEATED S The return Rugby match between the Auckt and Waikato representatives was played _ at Eden Park on Saturday afternoon and was won by Auckland by 27 points to 8. When tho teams met at Hamilton on the King's ' Birthday, Auckland was successful by 35 points to '25. The weather on Saturday was ® fine and warm, but the ground was very t heavy. There was an attendance of 10,000. t Owing to Tetzlaff (halfback) and Walde--3 grave (front row forward) being unable to s play. D. Barchard filled tho halfback posii tion, while E. Gray went into the pack. Pike 3 started off as hooker, but this position was f taken at the end of about five minutes by , Cray, Pike playing on the outside of the front row. Hill, first five-oighths, suffered a r head injury when he made a diving tackle . halt-way through the first spell and his place was taken by Donaldson. Dunn, right wing, hurt his wrist and did not take tho field i after half-time. Ho was replaced by Fox. who scored three tries in succession in tho closing stages of tho game.' The scoro does not dive a true indication r of the run of tho play, as there was an element of luck attached to somo of Auckland's tries. Waikato had much tho better - of the play territorially in tho first spell 3 and well deserved its lead of B—3. Tho Waii kato forwards played splendidly, their loose rushes causing trouble to the defonce. They 3 supported tho man on the ball in great style - and deserved better success in the way of Y tries. As in past years, tho Waikato backs did not give their forwards the necessary Assist- - ance. Russell, who gave a fine exhibition of l halfback play, got the ball away smartly to his backs, but tlie five-eighths indulged in , too much kicking, losing possession of the 1 ball wnen on attack and robbing the threequarter line of opportunities. On the left wing, Maclean, former Auckland representative, was starved. He made tho most of his only real chance when the ball was kicked to hiui by u back who was attempting to clear. The winger gathered it in. shook off Dunn's effort to tackle him and dived through tho arms of Sorenson to srround the ball for a good try. Maclean could have been given more opportunities with advantage to his - side. The Auckland forwards were outplayed by . tho Waikato pack in tho first spell, but they c showed to much better advantage in the second 3 spell when the only department in which they s were outclassed was in obtaining possession of the ball from the scrums. In this connec- , tion Catley gave a rare performance for the > visitors. He won the ball from 25 scrums to s his opponent's 10. the respective tallies being x 12 —7 in the first spell and 13 —3 in the „ second. 3 The Auckland backs did not revoal the combination expected of them, and nearly all the f tries were tho result of solo, or opportunist, » efforts. Some of the passes in tho first spell were thrown too high. Donaldson frequently s found gaps in tho defence, mainly through - ( Codlin, Waikato's first five-eighths, not keep- . ing his correct position. Rao also made some l good openings and he and Donaldson were 1 too clever and fast off the mark for their op- - ponents. Tho line-kicking of both sets of l backs was poor. , Tries for Auckland were scored by Fox (3), , Wiles (2), Dunn and Gunning. Gumour con- " verting three. Codlin and Maclean scored for Waikato, Morrow converting one try. Mr E. D. Hill was referee. j SECONDARY SCHOOLS' GAMES .t Mount Albert Grammar's lead of two points r in the Auckland Secondary Schools' Rugby championship was reduced by one on Satur- • day, when the team played a drawn game i with Sacred Heart College on Eden Park No. . 2 ground. Each team obtained a penalty goal „ —Smith for Mount Albert and Gardiner for ? Sacred Heart. Mount Albert has yet to play 1 King's College in the second round. Auckland r Grammar School overwhelmed Technical College, tho score being 'lO points to 5. Taka- ' puna Grammar beat Otahuhu Technical High 1 School by 10 points to 3. I UNIVERSITIES' MATCH 3 (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH. Sunday A field goal in the last second of play decided the annual Rugby fixture between South Island "Universities and North Island 1 Universities at Lancaster Park yesterday, 1 before a crowd of nearly 4000. South Island 3 won 9 —S. The kicker was D. Murdoch, first five-eighths, who earlier in the spell had a 3 similar shot, the ball hitting one of the posts. " For the greater part of the spell North was > leading S—s, and it seemed that it was dest tined to win the match. Tho potted goal came as a great surprise to the spectators. ' many of whom had begun to stream out of " the ground. , , .. It was a game in which the second spell was far more exhilarating than the first. Before the interval the plavers seemed to lack fire and confidence. On resuming however, the match took on an aspect of a typical University fixture, and. with play fast and open, rush and counter-rush followed in quick succession. The players on both sides hriDuled more effectively than in the first SP®"Foreman scored for the South Island. Most interest centred in the fortunes of Metro College and Naval Base, the two teams which are leading in the competition, with a point between them and one game to play. Metro College was successful over Mount Albert Grammar Old Boys at headquarters. while at the Domain in a sea of mud Naval Depot just got homo against Air Force Tho meeting of these two next Saturday should be the highlight of the season.
