CITY TEAM IN LEAD

MANUKAU AND MARIST DRAW

There was a large attendance at Carlaw Park on Saturday afternoon to witness the continuation of (he Auckland Rugby League's senior grade competition, The No. 1 ground was in surprisingly good order after a week's rain. A feature of the scries was the defeat of Otahuhu, one of the two teams Icadincr the championship. City now takes the lead. Marist, which was a litile unlucky, drew with Manukau after an exciting contest in the main game. Mount Albert surprised by defeating Otahuhu in the curtain-raiser. On No. :2 ground Richmond defeated North Shore and Ponsonby won from Newton. City was pressed throughout by Point Chevalier at Walker Park and won by a narrow margin. With more accurate goal-kicking. Marist would have defeated Manukati, and in other respects the former went close to success Hughes and White, Marist's inside backs, passed across-field instead of varying their attacks. Four Marist attempts at goal missed, the ball once hitling a post. A penalty goal to Marist was the only score in the first spell. Halfway through the second spell Manukau was unlucky to miss a try when Butler heal the defence, hut Werohia dropped Rogers' pass. Marist had a good grip on the game 'JO minutes before time, when Tc Weri raced through to score. Brilliant play by Murray. Rogers and M. Thompson resulted in Butler scoring for Manukau.
