TE AWAMUTU MEETING

INTEREST IN CUP HORSES BY ARCHER Interest in the Waipa Racing Club's Summer Meeting at Te Awamutu on Saturday will be stimulated by the presence of several prominent candidates for the Auckland Cup and the Railway Handicap, major events on the first day of the Auckland Racing Club's Summer Meeting at Ellerslie on December 27. Owing to an alteration in the rehandicapping condition, the "winner of the Te Awamutu Cup. principal event on Saturday, will not be subject to a rehandicap for the Auckland Cup. Only winners of a race or races exceeding the collective value of £SOO to the winner shall be subject to a rehandicap for the Auckland Cup this year, and the Te Awamutu Cup is worth but £2BO to the winner. Candidates for the Railway Handicap will be subject to rehandicap if any is successful at Te Awamutu, and there are several in the Flying Handicap, which bears an open aspect. The Railway horses in the Flying Handicap are Sleepy Fox, Olga's Pal, Royal Glory, Our Joy, Brief and Kinstep, and most prominent among these as far as Ellerslie prospects are concerned are Royal Glory and Sleepy Fox. It is certain that Lord Chancellor and Lou Rosa will attract considerable attention if they start in the Te Awamutu Cup. They are among the favourites for the Auckland Cup, and will only require to run prominently on Saturday to find even more supporters. Lord Chancellor is believed by many to be next best in the Dominion to Kindergarten, from whom he is receiving 221b in the Auckland Cud. and his record Is that of a good horse. Lord Chancellor is a four-year-old, and is in only his second season of racing, having commenced as a three-year-old in August, 1042. He ran 12 times last season for six firsts and three seconds, winning from six furlongs to a mile and three-quarters (G.N. St. Leger), and he earned £3360 in stakes, being the fifth highest winner in the Dominion behind Rakanul, Kindergarten, The Joker and Royal Lancer. Lord Chancellor has had three runs this season for two firsts, one at six furlongs, and one at a mile and a-half, and once unplaced. When he ran unplaced in the Waikato Cup last month, he was not at his best after having been eased in his work, .vet he was not far away at the finish, even with his 9.13. In

the meantime, Lord Chancellor has been galloping well, and he should strip _in better condition on Saturday. Once or twice he has shown slight signs of soreness, but he did tnai at one period last season when it did not affect his form. All lovers or a good horse are hopeful that Lord Chancellor will continue to train on thg right way, and be fit to play his part in the important races of the summer. , .. . Lou Rosa has been unplaced in ma four races this season, but he began much above himself, and is now at a stage where he may return to his true form at any time. It will be recalled that he was unplaced jD his first five starts last season, after walah he was second to Kindergarten la the Auckland Cup, and then equalled the New Zealand record of 2.30 for a mile and a-half in winning the Auckland Racing Club Handicap. Lou Rosa is likely to command much attention on Saturday, especially as he may be produced more forward in condition than for nis earlier races this season. Another pair who may add interest to the Te Awamutu Cup are Gay Lally and Te Hinemoa, who were fourth and fifth respectively in the Waikato Cup last month. Slight improvement upon that form should giv® them excellent prospects on Saturday. What may assist Gay Lally and Te Hinemoa on the turning track at Te Awamutu is that both are capable of taking forward positions early. Te Hinemoa will also have the additional advantage of racing on her home course. Moreover, she is an improver whose turn to win a good handicap may come at any time.
