FARMER KILLED

SON SENT TO HOSPITAL TRUCK FALLS INTO RIVER (0.C.) TAUMARUNUI. Monday A well-known farmer was killed on Saturday, when the half-ton truck he was driving fell into the Wanganui River. He was:— Mr. Walter Edwin Brightwell, farmer and drover, aged CO, a South African War veteran. Mr. Brightwell was driving to his farm down River Road, about two miles from Taumarunui, when he met a countv lorry. He tried to pass on the outside of the narrow road and the truck rolled 20ft into a deep, swiftflowing part of .the Wanganui River. His son, Roy, the other occupant of the truck, although injured, neld on to his father until they were washed against a bank, where the driver of the lorry assisted him ashore. Mr. Brightwell died immediately and his son was admitted to hospital for cuts and bruises. The truck disappeared. YOUNG GIRL DROWNED WAIROA RIVER TRAGEDY (P.A.) WAIROA, Monday About four o'clock yesterday afternoon a drowning accident occurred in the Wairoa River. The victim was: Edna Baker, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. Baker, of North Clyde. The girl, aged nine, wa« bathing and disappeared unnoticed by those in the vicinity. Her body haa not yet been recovered. ARM BETWEEN ROLLERS INJURED MAN'S ORDEAL (0.C.) WHAKATANE, Monday While working at the Whakatane paper mills Mr. James Cassin, married, aged 38, had his left arm caught between the rollers of a machine and dragged in almost to the shoulder. The machine was stopped, but as it could not be reversed it had to be partially dismantled before Mr. Cassin's arm could be freed. During the hour entailed by this operation the injured man remained conscious. A doctor was in attendance. Mr. Cassin was removed to the Whakatane Hospital, where amputation of the arm was performed immediately. His condition to-day was reported to be satisfactory. AMERICAN RESCUERS BUSH SHOOTING ACCIDENT (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Monday The member of a shooting party in the bush at the back of Wainui-o-Mfita who wu.s accidentally shot yesterday was Mr. Walter Kaspar. 'He was not brought out of the bush until the early hours of this morning. A party of United States marines took a heavy six-wheeled truck five miles up the bed of a creek and brought Mr. Kaspar to a waiting Air Force ambulance. The rescue party, which left Lower Hutt at 7 p.m. .yesterday, included a doctor from the Air Force, United Slates marines, and members of the Tararua Tramping Club. The party reached its destination, a hut five miles in from the Wainui Road, about midnight. Mr. Kaspar was brought to Lower Hutt about 3 a.m. and thence to the Wellington Hospital. BODY RECOVERED (0.C.) MATAMATA. Monday The body of Mr. Frederick Barugh, who was reported missing from his home at Turanga-o-moana on Sunday, November 28, has been found in the Waihou River. An inquest for identification purposes was opened before Mr. A. J. Tong, coroner, and adjourned sine die. One of the most successful farmers in the Matamata district, Mr. Barngh was a noted breeder of Clydesdale horses. During the last war he served with the Fourth Waikatos. DENNISTON MINE FIRE (P.A.) DUNEDIN, Monday The position regarding the serious fire which recently occurred at the Westport Coal Company's Denniston colliery is reported to be very much improved. Advice received in Dunedin to-day stated that normal work will be resumed to-morrow.
