RUGBY FOOTBALL

SENIOR .CHAMPIONSHIP

SUCCESS OF GARRISON SIDE By defeating Technical Old Boys in the curtain-raiser game at Eden Park on Saturday afternoon the Garrison team won the Auckland Rugby Union's senior championship for the 1U43 season. The two teams which were equal in second place, Marist and Manukau. were beaten by Navy and GraftonPonsonby respectively. The weather was fine and there was a fair attendance. The main fixture was that between Navy and Marist, the former winning by 14 points to 5, after leading (J-nil at half-time. The Nau' forwards gave a line display, obtaining a fair share of the ball from the scrums and following up fast in the loose, it was in the latter respect that they frequently gained a lot of ground and they certainly bustled the opposing backs. Good defence by the Navy backs also checked passing rushes, while the accurate and long line-kicking of Nolan, the fullback, saved the Navy forwards a lot of running about. Navy was the better team on the day and confirmed the impression (hat it would have been very hard to beat for the championship had it been able to retain its team intact throughout the season. Waldograve am! Niven, two of the side's'best forwards, and Nolan have been missing for several matches. Outplayed in the forwards, the Marist team seldom looked like winning, although, if Sorenson kicked some goals from penalty shots in easy positions, a different complexion would have been placed upon the game. Following were the results:—Navy, 11 (tries by Great head Russell and Robinson, Nolan converting one and Barry kicking a penalty goal), Marist, u (try by Barchard, converted by Sorenson); Garrison, 24 (tries by Nordgren, -, Arblaster, '2. and Galley, Gibbons converting two and Hedge one, the lastnamed also kicking a penalty goal). Technical, 11 (tries by McKenzie and* Sheehan Sharplin converting one and kicking two penalty goals); Grafton-Ponsonby, 17 (three tries by Bielcski, two converted by Edwards, and potted goal by Cocks). Manukau, 8 (try by Dunn, converted by-Boryer who also kicked a penalty goal). Second Division.—Suburbs, 2-1, Takapuna. 11; Air Force No. '2, 10. ARMY TEAMS' MATCH NORTH ISLAND BEATS SOUTH (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Sunday North had a comfortable win by 26 points to 9 over South in an inter-island Army match at Athletic Park yesterday afternoon before a crowd of 15,000. Johns (fullback) and Tindill (halfback) gave displays for North up to the best inter-island standard. Johns excelling in goal-kicking. The South forwards failed to pack solidly, and Parsons, behind the scrum, had a difficult task all day through the North forwards being able to harass him. The find of the match was Paewai as a fiveeighths. A fo;.;: t aso in the inter-island frame he gave .t hue display behind the scrum, although inclined to run over-much "Yesterday he was the outstanding inside back, frequently carving great holes in the defence with clever propping and side-stepping. He also handled brilliantly, although his positional play was faulty, causing long pac-ses thrown out by Parsons to go astray at times. Much interest centred in Parsons, because of his brilliant games in the Middle East. His passes were the longest and swiftest seen at Athletic Park for a long time, but he had limited opportunities. Johns, Smith and Tindill were the outstanding backs next to Paewai. Johns is clearlv in All Black class. Coull, Gunning and Young (North), and Piror (South) were the best forwards. Smith, Novak. Tindill and IJobson scored tries for North. Johns converting two. kicking two penalty goals and Dotting a goal. Cochrane scored for South, and Murdoch kicked two penalty goals. Sedrton Shield Retained.—A Press Association message from Westport states that, in a hard battle under ideal weather conditions. Buller (holder) on Saturday succeeded in retaining the Seddon Shield against Nelson's vigorous challenge by 11 points to nil. The Buller forwards were very lively and never let up on the Nelson backs, who were kept more . r less on the defensive throughout. Tries were scored for Buller by W. Mnmm and A. Cummings, Nicholson converting one and kicking a penalty goal. The attendance was the largest at a shield match during the wa r ASSOCIATION GAMES Ideal conditions prevailed for the three attractions staged by the Auckland Football .. v»c;ation at- Blandford Park on Saturday f.,';™T7iTi::ra. and there wair a fair crowd in-«V temlaoce. The first game, between two Fijian teams, who played in bare feet, produced some guod football, Greens defeating Reds by the odd goal m five. At the conclusion of their game, the Fijians performed a war dance, wtiiie during the interval in the next game, and prior to the representative match, the rendering of native melodies was appreciated by the crowd. In the vital club match, between Comrades and Eastern Suburbs, a fine exhibition of the code was witnessed, and, although Comrades won b,v the only goal scored, a division of the points would have been a better criterion of the play, which was fast and spectacular. Comrades now share the championship honours with Metro-College. The main attraction was the meeting of Auckland and Navy representative teams in a Drurnmond Cup fixture. A last-minute defection upset the Navy side, which took some time to settle down. Auckland led 2—o at half-time. Each team scored two goals in the second spell, in which the heading of the Navy players was a feature. Following were the scores and scorers:— Drurnmond Cup: Auckland, 4 (Webber 3, Richards).
