SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP SUCCESS OF MANUKAU TEAM In spite of a heavy ground, a fast and open game was witnessed at Carlaw Park on Saturday afternoon, when Marist defeated Richmond in the principal fixture of the Auckland Rugby Leaguo's senior grade competition. With only two more matches to be played, Manukau is assured of the season's honours, as it has a lead of six points. The curtain-raiser, between Ponsonby and North Shore, was well contested, and Ponsonby were soen to advantage. On No. 2 around. .Mount Albert comfortably beat Otahuhu, while City outclassed a weakened Newton team. There was only a fair attendance. Marist's decisive win against Richmond was uue to a largo extent, to the splendid play of the forwards, who harassed attempts at team play by tho opposing backs. The Marist pack showed speed in the loose, and its tackling was solid. In the first- spell, the Marist backs handled well, and there wore plenty of exciting incidents. A fine try by Hughes and a good effort by Rangi were features of the first spell, at the end of which Marist led by 10 points to 0. Marist handled the conditions well and used excellent spoiling tactics. The forwards were tireless throughout. Simpson was the best forward on the ground, and gavo a high-class display of correct wet-day methods. The American, Knight, was also very good, while McLeod and Skinner played fine games. The Marist inside backs, Nicholson (half) and Hughes and McWilliams (five-eighths) wero seen to advantage in clever play. Rangi on tho wing was impressive, and Brocklcss played a, sound game at fullback. ASSOCIATION GAMES MILITARY TEAMS' CONTEST in spite of the wintry conditions, the representative Soccer game between Northern and Central Military Districts at Blandford Park on Saturday afternoon provided a thrilling contest, with the result in doubt right up to the final whistle. The game was virtually an Auckland-Wellington one and the standard of football shown was typical of previous encounters between the provinces. A fast pace was set. and maintained. Auckland had the better of the early exchanges, in which Flyger, Evans and Richards were prominent, but the score at. half-timo. 4-all, was a good indication of the merits of the teams. In the second spell Wellington took the offensive and Wiseman and Higgs, the Auckland backs, had a hard time. With long clearances, howover, they got their forwards going, and with Robinson on the right wing and Noyer on the left, swinging the ball across field, Sliarpe, Richards and Hope Ede provided a formidable attack. Tho final score was o—s0 —5 in favour of Central. The senior championship matches were continued and the wins of Eastern Suburbs and Air Force leave the issue now lying between Comrades, Metro-College A, and Mount Albert Grammar Old Boys A with three points between them.
