Brigadier O. S. J. Duff, D.5.0., R.N.Z.A., left for the south last night. Mr W. E. Hale, chairman of the Dairy Board, arrived from Wellington yesterday. Lieutenanit-Gerieral E. Puttick, D.5.0., General Officer Commanding in New Zealand, arrived in Auckland yesterday. Lieutenant-Colonel D. G. Ball, director of the Army Education and Welfare Service, arrived from Welling- - ton yesterday. Lieutenant-Colonel H. C. Hemphill, liaison officer between the Army and the Maori war effort, arrived from the south yesterday. THE EPSOM SCHOOL CHANGE IN STATUS FAREWELL CEREMONY HELD A function was held in the grounds of the Epsom District School yesterday when the pupils bade farewell to their headmaster, Mr. T. N. Hewlett, and his staff, and to the school committee. A change in the status of the school will be effective from Monday, when the building will be used as a Normal School and is to be under the control of the Auckland Education Board. A presentation was made to Mr. Hewlett by Mrs. E. McNair, chairman of the school committee, on behalf of the committee, staff and pupils, and a bouquet was presented to Mrs. Hew-, lett. Presentations were also made to Mrs. McNair on hehalf of the staff, committee and pupils. Some radio I recordings of two of the school's past j choirs were played, and at the conclusion of the ceremony all the adults joined hands round the children and | sang "Auld Lang Syne." LATE MR. PAIKEA | CEREMONY AT ORAKEI The body of the late Hon. P. K. Paikea. Minister in charge of the Maori War Effort, is to be brought to Auckland tn-morrow and will remain at Orakei Pa until Monday to enable the public to pay last respects. On Monday it will be conveyed to its final restingplace. A party from Ratana Pa accompanied the body last night by train for Ngaruawahia. On arrival this morning it will be taken to the local pa in a funeral ■ cortege. It will be received in traditional Maori custom and lie in state until to-morrow morning, when, accompanied by parties from Ratana and the Waikato people, it will reach Auckland about 10.45 a.m. There will be further Maori ceremonies at Orakei and a general tangi. Between three and four o'clock the ' public will have an opportunity of payi ing respects to the late Mr. Paikea. i OBITUARY MR. W. RYAN (0.C.) TE AWAMUTU, Friday The death has occurred of Mr. William Ryan, of Te Awamutu, aged 61.' p Mr. Ryan was born in Hamilton. Alter spending 14 years in the service of the Railway Department, he was for 2i years caretaker of the Waipa Racing Club's course. He is survived by his , wife, four sons and two daughters. MES. MARY JANE ADAMS The death has occurred, in her 79tli year, of Mrs. Mary Jane Adams, who had been a resident of Pukekohe for over 50 years. Born in County, Down, Ireland, Mrs. Adams was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Robert Tomlin- . . son, and came to .New Zealand as an infant with her parents on the ship Dauntless. The family settled at Mauku, later moving to Papakura. Mrs. Adams • was married to Mr. John Adams, of 1 Pukekohe, at the Anglican Church, Papakura, in 1S8:3, and they celebrated . their diamond wedding anniversary hisr 1 January. Mrs. Adams was an active member of the Anglican Church. Slio , is survived by her husband, four sonand six daughters. There are 3.0 grand- . children and four great-grandchildren. SUPREME COURT SITTINGS Owing to the absence of both Mr. Justice Fair and Mr. Justice. Oallan from Auckland, there will be no sitting of the Supreme Court here before the end of next week. Morrison, N.Z.S.C., was until lately attached to the headquarters of Lieutenant-General Sir Bernard Freyberg, .V.C., in Tunisia. He graduated from Duntroon Military College in December, 1939, and after occupying - various staff positions in New Zealand • he sailed with the Second Echelon. For . a time he was attached to the head- , . quarters of General Sir Claude Auchin- . leek, and saw service in Egypt, Greece, Crete and Libya. He was wounded in : Greece. He is a son of Mr. W.
