ATHLETIC SPORTS

J CHAMPIONSHIP EVENTS UNITED NATIONS SERVICES The outstanding performers at the provincial United Nations' services' championships held by the Auckland Amateur Athletic Centre at Sarawia Park on Saturday afternoon were an Army representative, D. M. Harris, and an Air Force competitor, I. V. Goddard. A fortnight earlier Harris had gained the senior provincial championships over 100, 220 and 410 yards, and oil Saturday lie won the services' title over the same distances. Goddard took the honours in the 1 '2O and 220 yards hurdles and the broad jump. He is the holder of the provincial championship in the two latter events, and his effort in the broad jump was a notable one. He was evidently feeling the effects of his heavy programme in the last race of the day, the -110 yds hurdles, in which he finished second to A. J. Lilies, the title-holder, but was disqualified for running down three obstacles. K, J. Morgan, shot putt champion of Otago, and discus throw junior champion of New Zealand, won these contests on Saturday very decisively. Ati interested visitor was an officer of the United States Marine Corps, Captain R. C. Torrance, of Seattle. Captain Torrance, who spoke appreciatively of the sporting proclivities of New Zealanders, is one of the ten members of the committee of the United States Olympic, Federation, and vice-president of the Amateur Athletic Union of the United States of America. BASEBALL GAMES Interesting and keen play marked the three games held at Carlaw Park on Saturday under the control of the Auckland Baseball Association, and the New Zealanders showed a sound knowledge of the game in their match with a United Slates team. The ladies' representative match between Auckland and Hamilton provided a fair exhibition. In the first two innings of the United States v. New Zealand game it was three up and three down for each side, the pitching of Whylf! for New Zealand and Yurczyk for Ihe United States being notable. Several times the New Zealand catcher, Blackie, earned applause for smart fielding, while Dell, at short slop, gave the Americans little opportunity of takincr risks between liases. In the third innings Shupenko sent the ball high over left fielder's head for the biggest hit seen at the park this season. Following were the scores:—U.S.: 0. 0. 4. (Yurczyk, Ethier, Shupenko, Johnson). 3 (Sullivan, Neidzweicki, Ortez), 0. 2 (Sullivan. Nledzweicki) —9; New Zealand: 0, 0. 0. 0. 0. 0, o—o. Auckland ladies: 7 (Kingi. M. Mack, Rankin. Paul. Brown.
