BOY SHOT IN LEG
CHALLENGE IGNORED EARLY MORNING EPISODE (P.A.) "WELLINGTON, Thursday _ Tho ignoring of a challenge of a military guard who interrupted the stealing of petrol at Kaiwarra early on March 11 resulted in the shooting of a boy, aged 16, who is now in hospital with a wound in the leg. This was disclosed in the Magistrate's Court today when two youths pleaded guilty to two charges of stealing petrol and one of stealing a wheel and tyre. The accused, Ivan Henry White, aged 17, driver, and Patrick Alfred Burns, aged 20, a soldier, were sentenced by Mr. W. F. Stilwell, S.M., to 14 days' imprisonment. Tho police stated that the accused and a boy who would come before the Court later went on an escapade at midnight on March 10 in a motor-car owned by Burns. They were stealing petrol from parked trucks about 4 a.m. when they were disturbed. The guard was on the alert. The youths ran and one was shot in the leg.
