American League: New York, 95, 47, 60.9; Boston, SO, 56, 60.6; St. Louis, 77, 07, 53.5; Cleveland, 70, 72, 49.3; Detroit, 69, 74, 48.3; Chicago, 61, 75, -14.9; Washington, 57, S3, 40.7; Philadelphia, 52, 93, 35.9. The Office of Defence Transportation has ordered a sharp curtailment of travel to football games and other sports events in order to conserve transportation facilities for war purposes. This action apparently foreshadows the abandonment of spectacles like the Rose Bowl and Cotton Bowl games for the duration of the war. The Dodgers Club, after paying 60,000 dollars for transferring their own players, have acquired the pitcher Earl Reid and third baseman Joe Bestudik from the Indianapolis Club in the American Association. Yankees are retiring the seasoned Red Rolfe, who has signed a long-term contract with the Yale Athletic Association as coach for baseball and basketball squads. Babe Young, giant outfielder, has been sworn in for the coastguard and will report for duty at the end of the seasort. Latest baseball results are:—Cardinals beat Dodgers, 2 —l, thereby tying with them for first place in the National League race. Cardinals have won 29 of their last 31 games and experts give them an excellent chance of winning the pennant. Red Sox beat Indians, S—6; Yankees beat White Sox, 7 —l; Tigers beat Athletics, 6—5, in 11 innings; Reds beat Phillies, 4—l; Braves beat Pittsburg, 4—l; Senators beat Browns, 7—6, in 12 innings. Racing results.—Whirlaway won the 25,000 dollars Narragansett Handicap, Special Boysy being second and Valdina Orphan third. Alsab was scratched. Mr. George Widener's Rosetown won the 10,000 dollars Vineland Handicap, the Garden State Park's Level Best being second and Dark Discovery third. The Rhymer won the Edgernere Handicap at Aqueduct, beatins Pictor by half a length, with Our Boots third. Football. —The Army all-star team defeated New York Giants 16 points to 0 at the polo grounds. John Pingel, of Michigan State, Jack Wilson, of Baylor, and George Cafego, of Tennessee, starred for the Army. Giants were able to cross mid-field only twice.
