AUCKLAND EXCHANGE A FIRM MARKET Australian banks and industrials reflected the improved outlook in the South-west Pacific on the Auckland Exchange yesterday and higher quotations ruled for most of the leaders. The insurance section continued very firm and fresh advances were recorded both by New Zealands and South British. Miscellaneous Dominion securities were well supported. Wellington Woollens recorded a rise of 5s and Farmers' Trading gained another 3d with business at 20s ; 3d. Government stocks were firmly held with the exception of the Liberty Loan 3 per cents, which dropped another 2s 6d with a sale 10s below par. CLOSING QUOTATIONS

WOOL VALUES INCREASE FOR AUSTRALIA At this season's British contract prices the average value of the current Australian wool is approximately £2 10s a bale more than for the preceding three years. Under the 1939-42 prices the average value for Australia's production was about £l7 5s a bale; it is now about £l9 15s. The prices at which most clips are being appraised compared with 12 months before reflect the higher figures prevailing. In a few areas in which pastoral conditions have been ideal from the purely wool-growing standpoint unusually attractive wools have been shorn. In those cases the advance in the figures obtained is particularly marked. Referring to the statement of the Dominion Minister of Marketing: that the 15 per cent increase in the price of wool would not apply to the wool required for local consumption, the Sydney Morning Herald points out that the Australian manufacturer pays appraised figures, plus 25 per cent for shorn supplies, and 17% per cent for skin wools for local use. ALEXANDER MINES A profit, of £1795, insufficient to allow a dividend, is disclosed in the accounts of Alexander Mines, Limited (Reefton), for the year ended May 31, and compares with £1896 last year and £268 in 1910. The credit at the bank, plus gold in transit, with other cash items, totalled £3994 and creditors were owed £204. During the year £462 was paid as gold duty and £617 for war tax on gold. Total production of gold was valued at £10,165 from *"1396 tons of ore, compared with £14,099 from 2543 tons the previous year. The reduced output is attributed solely to shortage of labour. MINING YIELDS West Coast Dredges.—Barrytown group:August: Barr.vtown, 3260z, 1-19,000 yards, 411 hours; Kanieri, 10250z, 106,000 yards, 450 hours; Arahura, lS7loz, 225,000 yards, 554 hours.
