THE LEAGUE CODE
LEADING TEAM BEATEN PONSONBY TEAM'S SUCCESS Heavy tain and a greasy ball made conditions very unpleasant at Carlaw Park on Saturday afternoon. when the Auckland Rugby League concluded the second round of its senior grade competition. Strengthened by the inclusion of a number of players on leave from overseas, Ponsonby caused a surprise by defeating the leading team. Manukau, in a fine game in spite of the conditions. Splendid goal-kicking by A. Kay (Ponsonby) and T. Chase (Manukau) was a feature of the game. In the principal contest Richmond gained a one-point victory over Newton-Mount Albert. In the curtain-raiser, City-Otahuhu proved too good for Marist-North Shore, although there was little between the teams. Two good tries gave Richmond a lead at half-time by <S points to nil. Mount AlbertNewton played better in the second half and led by one point at one stage. Richmond was awarded a penalty near the posts and secured a lucky win. McDonald Kinney and McGregor were the best of the Richmond hacks, while Williams did a lot of useful work behind the scrum. Play was mostly confined to the forwards, and Davis. Crookall and h Williams were prominent. Emus and Cranch plaved well among the Newton-Mount Albert hacks, and Shadbolt nnd McKinnon worked hard among the forwards. Results were:—Richmond. 8 (tries by Kinney and Crookall and penalty goal by miliums), Newton-Mount Albert, 7 (try by Cranch, converted U.v Emus, who also kicked a penalty goal); Ponsonby, 11 (try by Jordan, converted by Kay, who also kicked four penalty goals), Manukau, 0 (three penalty goals by Chase); City-Otahuhu, 10 (tries by Donovan and Simons, Donovan converting ono and kicking a penalty goal). Marist-North Shore. 5 (try by Penman and penalty coal by Wiberg).
