RUGBY FOOTBALL

PLAY IN HEAVY RAIN MANUKAU BEATS GARRISON The defeat of Garrison, one of the leading teams, by Manukau was the surprise of Saturday afternoon's play in the Auckland Rugby Union's senior competition. This match was the principal attraction at Eden Park, where for the first time this season the games were played in rain. This fell fairly heavily and persistently and affected the . attendance. M.T.P. and Ranfurlys, which shared the lead with Garrison, met at Otahuhu. and the former's victory again places it at the head of the table. Garrison led by 6 points to nil at halftime. and. when a further three points had been added shortly after resuming, it appeared as though the side would have a comfortable win. A potted goal by Boryer, for Manukau, however, put new life into the team's forwards, who thereafter more or less dominated the play. A converted try placed the teams on even terms, and then Manukau proceeded to place the issue beyond doubt. Credit for Manukau's success undoubtedly goes to its forwards. They were very capably led and held together by W. Smith, the Auck land representative, who revelled in the conditions. They Quickly found a weakness in rush-stopping by Garrison's inside backs, with the result that, with ball at toe, they were able to keep tneir opponents ou defence for the greater part of the second spell. A mistake by Kingstone, which led to a converted try and made the scores eaual. also proved expensive. Kingstone has just returned from a southern military area and played his first game in Auckland this season as fullback for the Garrison team. Littlejohn, who had hitherto played at fullback. was moved to second five-eighths, a position obviously strange to him. Following were the results: —Manukau. 17 (tries by Muir, Leitchficld and Pascoe, two converted by Boryer, who also potted a goal), Garrison. !) (try by Weston and penalty goals by Ailken and Kingstone); A.S.C.. 0 (two penalty goals by liae). Technical Old Boys. (); M.T.P., 10 (tries by Anderson and Mitchell. Anderson converting both). Ranfurlys, a (penalty goal by Wickham); Graf-ton-Ponsonby, 18. Air Force No. '2, 8. Second Division. —Marist, 8. Training College, 3; Air Force No. 1. IS, Suburbs. 0; Grammar-University, 24. Takapuna, 0. Secondary Schools. —Auckland Grammar. 1-1, Mount Albert Grammar, 7; Technical College. 11, King's College, 3; Sacred Heart College '2'2, Takapuna Grammar, 8.
