RUGBY FOOTBALL

LEADING TEAM BEATEN

GOAL-KICKING WINS MATCH

The first series of matches In the second round of the Auckland Rugby Union's senior competition was played on Saturday afternoon when the leading team, M.T.P., suffered it« first defeat of the season. The side responsible for its downfall was Garrison, for whom A. J. Aitken, former Waikato representative, scored the whole 13 points, kicking three penalty goals and potting a goal. M.T.P.'s nine points consisted of two penalty goals and a try. There was a good attendance at Edfyi Park, where the ground was in excellent order. The main contest was interesting all the way through. Garrison held a comfortable lead of 13—3 at half-time, but failed to add to its total in-the second spell, whereas a couple of penalty goals placed M.T.P. within distance of victory. This may have been obtained had a couple of strong attacks been finished off successfully. In the first place Anderson lost a try through holding on to the ball too long and a little later Gregory had only to take a high pass cleanly to have a straight run in, but he knocked the ball on. At this stage the Garrison forwards, who had hitherto played with great dash in the loose, were tiling, and M.TjP. held the upper hand. The side made determined efforts to pull the game out of the fire, but mistakes at critical moments, especially the two already referred to, prevented it from succeeding. Three players stood out in the Garrison side, these being Aitken, Littlejohn and Gunning. Apart from his matchwinning kicking, Aitken played a very sound game and he allowed Gregory no latitude. His potted goal was a snappy effort after he had shook himself clear of Gregory's attempted tackle. Littlejohn earned frequent applause for his splendid defensive work and his accurate line-kicking. Gunning followed up tirelessly right through and was a source of annoyance to the opposing backs. He is a fine loose forward. Scott gave a splendid all-round exhibition at fullback for M.T.P. His positional play and anticipation were almost faultless and his long line-kicking saved his forwards a lot of running about. Hadley and Wolfsbnuer played fine games in the forwards, with Anderson and Petersen prominent in the loose. Following were the results:—Garrison, 13 (three penalty goals and potted goal by Aitken), M.T.P., 9 (try by Wolfsbauer and two penalty goals by Scott); C.R.0., 11 (tries by Clear.v and Butler, one converted by Brown, who also kicked a penalty goal),

Technical Old Boys, 8 (tries by Woolford and Brinsden, one converted by Delgrosso); Ranfurlys, 37 (tries by Dick, Potter, Pearson and Noakes, one converted by Wickham, who also kicked a penalty goal), GraftonPonsonby, 6; Manukau, 16 (tries by Bruford, Litchfield and Muir, Boryer converting two and kicking a goal from a mark), Air Force No. 2, 11 (tries by Price, Jerome and Underwood, the latter converting one). From authoritative sources it is reported that Sergeant Eugene Saffold has cancelled his recent order, issued verbally, that he did not have soldiers in nis platoon he could not whip or names he could not pronounce. The reason for the cancellation was that Private Pete Muiecis, former football player, who is also a heavy-weight boxer, whose record includes 28 straight knock-outs, has been assigned to Saffold s platoon.
