HELP IN DEFENCE
FARMERS' UNION OFFER An offer to place its organisation at the disposal of the Government to assist in defence measures has been made by the Auckland branch of the Farmers' Union, according to a statement at a meeting of the branch executive vesterday. The offer includes the services of the president, Mr. H. M. Rushworth, who stipulated that he should receive no payment or allowance. It was suggested that the direction in which the services of the union could best be used would be in assisting with the organisation of the Home Guard and the cultivation of an offensive spirit among the people. Mr. Rushworth said the offer had been received in a friendly spirit by the Prime Minister, Mr. Fraser, who had said he would refer it to the War Cabinet. At his request the offer had been placed before the military authorities.
Following a report by Mr. Rushworth on a conversation with the officer commanding the Northern Military District, Brigadier P. H. Bell, D.5.0., it was decided to make fresh representations to the Government. It was also suggested that arrangements should be made to enable officials of the union to collect scrap metal for the local manufacture of heavy grenades.
