DETENTION IN CUSTODY
OFFENDERS OVERSEAS REMOVAL TO DOMINION A sot of regulations has been gazetted providing for the removal to New Zealand and detention in custodv of persons from other parts of the British Commonwealth with the Governments of which New Zealand has entered into the necessary arrangements. The regulations, entitled the Colonial Detention Emergency Regulations, provide that any person taken into custody under their provisions shall be detained in such a place and under such conditions as the Minister of Justice thinks fit, and may be released by Ministerial order. Any person so taken into custody may at any time be placed on board any ship or aircraft about to leave New Zealand and detained there until the ship or aircraft has left. It is provided that the Minister shall act in accordance with any arrangements made with the Government concerned with the removal of a person to New Zealand. It was reported in June that representations had been made by the New Zealand Government to the" Governor of Fiji that New Zealand soldiers convicted of civil offences in Fiji should be repatriated to New Zealand to serve their sentences.
