SHOALING NOT SERIOUS
GREY RIVER FLOOD OTIRA FREIGHT REDUCTION (0.C.) GREYMOUTH, Wednesday The shoaling of berthages at the Greyniouth Wharf, brought about by flooding in the Grey River, has not been as serious as was anticipated. Dredging operations, which will commence either on Monday or Tuesday, will speedily remove the silt deposits. The bar remains at a fairly satisfactory depth of over 22ft. at high water, but this figure was far exceeded prior to the flooding. Two more minpr slips have occurred on the railway line between Brunner and Stillwater. One delayed the OtiraGreymouth goods train for about an hour, but the other caused no delay. Owing to storm damage and the blockage in the Midland line on Friday, the freight hauled through the Otira tunnel during the week ended on Saturday last was almost 3000 tons less than in the corresponding week of last year, the total being 8436 tons, compared with 11,020 tons in 1941 and 16,374 tons in 1940.
