RACING NEWS

TROTTING CLASSIC TWO-YEAR-OLD CONTEST HttDA POTTS IS FANCIED BY ABAYDOS 5 Instituted in 1937 by the Auckland Trotting Club with a view to encouraging breeding and early racing, the Great Northern Trotting Stakes has justified its existence as a classic. Five contests have been staged at Epsom, each producing keen competition. Horsepower won the first race narrowly -from Axminster, and the following year J. ■ t. Paul supplied first and second with Contender and Davey Day. Highland Scott won In 1939 and the next year Diamond Trust beat Portadown. Symphony won last year in 2.17, the race record. There is practically no public form among the majority of the acceptors for this year's race at Epsom on Saturday The only ones with race experience outside of matinee displays, are Hilda Potts and Free Again. Most of the others have had the benefit of " .matinee racing Hilda Potts, who narrowly defeated her Stable companion, Karnak, at the matinee in January in 2.25 for the mile, created a very favourable impression at Hawera, where, in a field of- older horses, she finished fourth. Hilda Potts was not started at Ashhurst on account of the rough track Golden Shadow's Lines

Althougi she was supported and defeated in the Timara Nursery Stakes, Free Again Is a distinct possibility. She is a nice type and on Tuesday'attracted attention at Epsom by pacing a- mile smartly on the outside of the course in 2.24. Free Again is a full-sister to Horsepower, who won the first two-year-old contest at Epsom. Golden Shadow will receive solid support on two counts. He is trained by J. Bryoe, who has an excellent record in preparing classic winners, and is f)y Red Shadow, whose stock show early racing ability. On the maternal side Golden Shadow traces to the great producer Muricata. Mourne Spring, who was third at the Epsom matinee in 2.25, is a full-sister to Portadown. Their dam, Kewpie's Guy, a member of the successful Kewpie family, was a high-class mare who did not attain early success. La Diamond is a good-looking gelding by Jewel Pointer from Black Pearl. He is a fnll-brother to Radio Queen. Our Machine Improved

Our Machine, by Auto Machine from Gwen 1 Thorpe, dam of Elissa and Cherrill, has made & good deal of progress in the last month, and -he may surprise. Good reports are to hand of Bonny Find,, a filly by Auto Machine from Lady Yvonne, dam of Peter's Find, a dual classic winner last season. She is trained by G. T. Mitchell, who is having a good run of successes. At the November matinee nothing showed up better in the two-year-old parade than Pirate's Jewel, who ruined his prospects in January by losing about 80 yards at the start. He ran on well at the end for fourth in 2.30. By Jewel Pointer from Gay Pirate, Pimte's Jewel is bred the right way. Manonee is by Swordsman from Cyone, .... dam of Cyone Girl and Josette. Carnival Queen, a roan filly by Dan Direct from a Matchlight mare, is shaping well in her preparation. Koheroa, bv Nobleman, sire of Cavalryman, from a Blue Mountain King mare, is an attractive fillv. but appears backward. The main., fancies may be Hilda Potts, Golden Shadow. Free Again and Pirate's . Jewel.

METEORIC RISE

BURT SCOTT WINS £2260 BY ABAYDOS

The dual success of Burt Scott at Addington last Saturday brings his record for the season to 10 wins arid two seconds in 12 starts. The two defeats inflicted on Burt Scott were by Catalpa, in the lempleton Handicap at Addington on January 2. and by StorrnWst in the Timaru Cup on March 14. In the first instance he was only beaten by a head, but Stormtost had a margin of two lenglns. The Timaru Cup was Burt Scott s first attempt at two miles. Prior to this season Burt Scott registered a win and five placings in 23 starts for M. J. McTigue, his earnings being £172. Bought by V. Alborn, Burt Scott has credited the new owner with £22 GO, and it does not look as if his run of success is finished. Burt Scott commenced the season with handicaps of 2.24, 3.3 and 4.55 for one mile, mile and a-quarter and two miles, respectively, but is now assessed at 2.12, 2.46 and 4.2!). He is nicely placed in the Wellington Trotting Cup and Wairarapa Handicap on Saturday and his prospects of increasing his winnings- are very bright, Tt is a remarkable feat on the pari of Burt Scott to wn his way from the improvers' class to a free-for-all victory in six months. 1 ~ By U. Scott from Great Burton, by Great c Audubon, a successful sire of matrons, Burt Scott appears destined to reach the champion Claim. He should not experience any difficulty -#;tmlifying for the next New Zealand Trotting Cup and starting one of the favourites.
