HOSTILITY TO PRESS
LABOUR CONFERENCE Complete unanimity on the need for action to he taken by the Government to provide for more rigid control of the press was shown at the Labour Party Conference last week when several remits dealing with this question were under consideration, states the Labour newspaper, the Standard. The remits were reported upon by a special committee which expressed the opinion that the press was at present a menace to democracy and the successful prosecution of the war. Abolition of anonymous the right to be given to persons criticised through the press to reply to such criticism, the suppression of newspapers guilty of offences against the security of the State, and the question of the freedom of the press, were among the matters dealt with in the remits.
