STOP-WORK MEETINGS

WARTIME ABOLITION URGED (0,: C.) OAMARU, Wednesday The attitude of waterside workers in holding stop-work meetings during wartime was criticised by the chairman, Mr. R. K. Ireland, at a meeting of the Oamaru Harbour Board. The board was discussing a recent incident on the Oamaru waterfront when work was suspended for three hours, with the result that a quantity of unshipped cargo had to be railed to Timaru and loaded on the same boat at that port. Mr. Ireland suggested that the facts should be placed before the Hon. A. H. Nordmeyer, member 'for Oamaru, and a request made for his support for the abolition of stop-work meetings for the duration of the war. It was decided to attempt to come to some common-sense arrangement. When asked for his views on stopwork meetings, Mr. Nordmeyer, who attended the meeting later, said he thought that it would be possible to come to some amicable agreement. He was quite prepared to take the matter up with- the authorities and the New Zealand Waterside Workers' Union.
