QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS BY FEMINA J. A.M. (Remuera), would like a recipe for lemon yeast. Cleaning Aluminium J.K. (Parnell) would like to know how to remove the black stain caused by boiling eggs in an aluminium saucepan. Apple Cider * D.K.D. (Epsom), would be grateful for instructions for making apple cider; also which kind of apples give the best results. Crocheted Gloves In answer to several inquiries, further copies of the pattern for crocheted gloves and handbag are available on receipt of a stamped addressed envelope. Waterproofing Tent A.D. (Parnell) has sent the following instructions to M.E. (Te Kuiti) Mix 4oz. alum. 4oz. sugar of lead in three gallons of cold water. Stir frequently. Next morning dissolve 2oz. ising glass in 1 cup of water and add to mixture. Pour the mixture over the article to be water-proofed. Soak thoroughly for several hours and hang up to dry without wringing. Care should be taken to keep back all sediment. Potato Yeast So many requests have been received for the two potato yeast recipes referred to in last week's Femina that Ex-baker's was published on April 10 and S.M (Dargaville) is given below. To make the yeast, boil three small potatoes. Mash them with 1 tablespoon sugar and loz. flour. Stir in potato water (made lukewarm by adding a little more water). If you can get a little old yeast, add to the mixture. Will be ready for use in 24 to 48 hours Put in a mason jar and do not seal. Bread.—Three sifters of flour mixed well with a handful salt. Make a hole in centre and pour in 3$ cups of wellstirred yeast Mix from middle, then add 2 pints warm water and stir from outside. Knead until it does not stick to board Make a cut in middle and leave in warm place to rise, about 4 hours. Knead well; put" in tins and let rise again. Bake.
