DEMAND FOR GRAPES
LOCAL SUPPLIES SELL WELL More plentiful supplies of outdoor grapes were offered at the City Markets yesterday, and good prices were realised for all varieties. Albany Surprise, the early variety, from the Birkdale, Birkenhead and Henderson districts sold at 19s 9d to 21s a case. Although no Te Kauwhata grapes were offered in Auckland yesterday, supplies from that district brought a record price of from 25s to 26s 6d a 161b. crate, at Hamilton. Hothouse grapes met with a keen demand. Black Hamburg selling at Is 4d to 2s 2d per lb. and Gros Colman at Is 8d to 2s 8d per lb. Although grapes at Te Kauwhata were hampered by unfavourable conditions in the early stages of the season, no ill-effects are ire ported and the crop at present maturing is stated to be equal, in quality and quantity, to the best of former seasons.
