RUN AT A LOSS
EARLY SUNDAY TRAMS The early tramway service inaugurated on Sunday morning by the Auckland Transport Board for the convenience of waterside workers changing shifts and for the public generally, was run at a loss, stated Mr. A. E. Ford, engineer and manager, at a meeting yesterday, although no difficulty had been experienced in obtaining sufficient men to run the cars. The service involved 21 cars —12 inward l and nine outward —and payment in overtime wages of £l9. Mr. Ford recalled that in its letter requesting the service, the Waterfront Control Commission had stated that the men had had taxicabs provided previously, resulting in a great waste of petrol. He considered that if the commission could afford to provide taxis for the men they could afford to pay a subsidy to the board for the use of its trams. It was decided to ask the Waterfront Control Commission to provide a subsidy to enable the service to be run without loss.
