OBITUARY

MR. G. H. MINCHIN The death has occurred of Mr. George Hamilton Minchin, of 11 Anne Street, Devonport, in his 85th year. Born in Yorkshire, lie was the second son of Major and Mrs. J. W. Minchin. He came to New Zealand in 1882 on the Loch Urr. As a young man, he took up farming in North Auckland, and remained there for 37 years. He took a keen interest in municipal affairs, being for 18 years a member of. the Whangarei County Council, chairman of the same body for six years, chairman of the Whangarei Harbour Board and North Auckland Hospital Board, president of the local Chamber of Commerce, member of the (irst bowling and cricket clubs at Whangarei, and justice of the peace for 40 years. His second wife died 11 years ago. CAPTAIN R. McK. CLIFFE A veteran Auckland master mariner, Captain R. McKenzie Cliffe, died in a private hospital yesterday. Captain Cliffe spent many of his earlier years in sail, and had wide and varied experience all over the world. He was for some time in command of vessels on the New Zealand coast before he left the sea some 30 years ago to become a nautical surveyor. For a long time lie held the only licence in Auddand for the adjustment of ships' compasses, and he also successfully conducted a navigation school until his retirement in 1938. In his young days, Captain Cliffe attained some repute as a boxer. He was the author of several volumes of verse, and published a number of sailors' tales which he had heard during his days at sea. MR. F. I. JONES (0.C.) WANGANUI, Sunday The death has occurred of Mr. Frederick I. Jones, aged 85. one of the oldest white men born in Wanganui. Mr Jones was one of the first students to attend the Wanganui Collegiate School, being a pupil from 1871 to 1872. He resided in Hawera for some years, and was elected to the Borough Council. Returning to Wanganui. Mr .Tones entered the bookselling business For many years he specialised in the collection and exchange of old books about New Zealand, and his collection was considered one of the best in the Dominion. MRS. L. ZINYAN (0.C.) WAIUKU, Saturday The death has occurred of Mrs. Pauline Zinyan, aged 71, wife of Mr. Lionel Zinyan. of Kohekohe. Mrs. Zinyan was. a daughter of the late Rev. W. E Mulgan. who was vicar of Onehunga. Besides her husband she is survived bv four sons and three daughters, There are 13 grandchildren.
