POTATO PRICES

POSITION OF RETAILERS A denial of the statement published on Saturday that the retail price of potatoes had risen on Friday, in spite of the rapid drop in wholesale quotations, was made by the secretary of the ; Auckland Retail Fruiterers' Association, Mr C. C. King, who said the retail price had been 4d per lb. for some time. "After reading Saturday's article," Mr. King said, ''members of the public expected an immediate drop in prices to 2£d per lb., or 51b. for Is." He explained that the majority of retailers still held supplies purchased at the beginning of the week at 26s 6d per cwt., and could not afford, when the wholesale price came down to 16s 6d, to sell straight away at olb, for Is.
