STOCKS AND SHARES

THE AUCKLAND EXCHANGE FIRMING IN WAR LOAN Conditions were quiet on the Auckland Stock Exchange yesterday but firmer levels ruled, particularly for a number of Australian stocks*. A forward move in original War Loan was confirmed in an advance of 5s to £BB 08, while the demand for other gilt-edged issues received l\ttle satisfaction. In other sections gains were made by Bank of New Zealand and New Zealand Breweries. Auckland Gas continued to weaken. Mount L,yells, now on an ex dividend basis, sold for the first time since the dividend reduction at Is 9d below their last business. CLOSING QUOTATIONS

WOOL APPRAISALS SEASON'S LATER CLIP REVIEW OF DATES LIKELY Catalogues for the third wool appraisal of the season in Auckland, which is set down to commence on December 9, will close on Saturday. Speaking yesterday of the progress made this season, the secretary of the Auckland Woolbrookers' Association, Mr, J. E. Connor, said the very unsettled spring had considerably retarded shearing and the present position contrasted very markedly with that, prevailing during last year's favourable spring weather. At the second appraisal this year on .November 14 (the mid-winter fixture ranks as the first appraisal of the season) some 13,000 bales were handled, atrainst nearly '20.000 bales up to the same stage last season. This leeway was likely to result in an abnormal quantity of wool becoming available for despatch to brokers' stores in late December and January and. if sent forward, would undoubtedly con?est the wool stores and further restrict the rate of appraisement. This was already somewhat slowed down because of the prevailing shortage of labour and because of the carry forward in store of a portion of last season's appraisements consisting of types of wool not at present in strong demand on account of their unsuitability for war purposes. Tentative appraisal dates have been fixed up to the end of February, but in view of the backward nature of the season, it is likely that the position will soon be reviewed and probably the appraising season will be extended with monthly fixtures up to the end of April. Growers, therefore, should be reasonably assured of a steady flow of wool through the appraisals, provided brokers are not inundated with abnormal quantities of wool during the peak of the season.
